I had a close-call today, and it got me thinking. I read too many accident threads and people who have had life-thretening operations, become disable as a result etc. and as much i dont like to think about that happening to me or anyone i know, i cant stop thinking about it, but cant ever see myself giving up.
Especially now i have my ZXR.

What accidents, if any, have you had and how did they affect you, your life, and your family

Re-assure me BCF! Smile

I've had no accidents which involved insurance on the bike but i've done some silly things like nearly rolling a Combo van to a point where it was 45 degrees to the road and we had to get the HIAB out to stop it from rolling.

On the bike i'm generally pretty observant but it just depends on the person etc. . . just be careful and aware of the road.

And i've had a car accident and it depends, your own vehicle then it doesn't matter and it's just considered a mistake but wait until it's a parents car.

iv fallen of bikes when i was younger but usually doing dumb stuff like trying to wheelie, or looking over my shoulder and not noticing the road curves (that one was dumb). but iv never had a "accident" not a proper one i guess, been in a few car ones tho, i think bike spills have a more fatal out come in a lot of cases so there more scaring and horror story worthy

A few minor off's, but a rather nasty one when a copper knocked me clean off and wrote off the ER.

My wife always worries, especially now we have kids, but accepts it's who I am and what I do. I can't see me giving up my pair of wheels for anything or anyone.

Lost a couple of friends but have lost more to other causes so I don't worry. Thumbs Up

i've had ermmmmm. a few lol.

my worse one was a head on into a fiesta, it was my fault as i lost control on a left hand bend and hit it head on but i was sideways on impact.
i ended up inside the car with the windscreen between me and the driving instructor. aye THE DRIVING INSTRUCTOR lol.
i only had bruises etc and my then RD250E only suffered the usual lights damage and a bent swingarm.
i wrote that bike off 3 times lol.

Richard Hammond's book "On The Edge".
I know your not likely to crash a jet car at 300 mph but hey, its a bloody good read. The hamster is a biker himself.
It mentions how his wife is always worried when he goes off to try out a new dangerous type of car or do a stunt, and how everybody's lives are effected when a loved one is in a crash.
Very insightful read!
I for one can't think wether its worse on the victim of the crash or his family and friends!

Crashed 21 years ago, riding a 125cc bike on a provisional license.
Had a full license for just over two years, done 22K since with no accidents.

Have a look into some 'advanced riding' stuff; either books or your local IAM or similar group. The police 'Bike Safe' day is a good introduction to it.
It's all about predicting the bad things that can happen and stopping yourself get into those situations.
Perfectly possible to ride at pretty decent speeds with out significant danger.

I've twice broken bones biking including one time rather badly; however one was off-road and the other on a track; neither has put me off doing those again. I know the risks and accept them.

My best was 5 offs in 1 day, Motocross not on the road. Quite a few on the road as well. Mr. Green

Thanks everyone Smile I suppose its the anticipation that is the worst, knowing that it may happen sometime even though you do everything you can to avoid it.
Id like to class myself as a defensive, safe rider even with only <2 years under my belt but sometimes its out of your control isnt it. But id say most situations can be avoided, handled in a good or better way to have a better outcome. Now i have a plausible bike im am looking into bike safe and other courses, and im covering alot of miles these days so im getting 'more' experience by the day Smile
Just have to take it as it comes i suppose, and not dwell upon the dangers, just enjoy and ride as safe and sensible as you can, right

only accident i've had (on the bike, lol) was quite a few years ago when a woman indicated to pull over and was slowing down so i went to pass her. Stupid cow then decided to pull a U turn using the junction on the right as i was alongside her.

Got knocked off but at least i could still walk after Rolling Eyes

Only one where I stuck it under a guard rail coming in too hot into a corner. Picked it up dusted me and it off and kept going .
So not really what I'd call an accident just an oops or a soft off Smile

oh and 4 years-ish

I've never had an accident, nor been involved in an accident. Been on the road since i was 17, i'm now 20.

Start small, work your way up to bigger bikes and remember the power is a privilege and not a right - you'll be just fine mate Thumbs Up

The way i see it is if something is going to happen to you it can happen in a car, train, plane or while walking there is nothing you can do about it. If its gonna happen its gonna happen!

I had 22 years without an accident on the bike. Had a silly mishap, where I had a tank slapper and ended up in a hedge, no damage, no injuries and then the one last year, resulting in broken bones and front end damage to bike. Didn't put me off riding and have since added another 28000 miles to the bike in the 14 months.

It's just probability and statistics really and insurance companies know this. Somewhere there's a set of statistics that say "you're more likely to have an accident in your first 2-3yrs" and that riders who've had had an accident are "more likely to have a second or third within the next year".

I've had one and I kind of expected it and in a perverse way I'm glad it's over. (Had my first real accident)

I ride 80 miles/day, in heavy traffic, in all weather, surrounded by half asleep muppets in tin cans, I'm relatively inexperienced though I've now had a little advanced training.

Do I expect it to happen again? In all probability, yes until I stop riding the threat is always there, but I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's all about risk management. You know what the factors and issues are and you limit them as you have opportunity to do so. The biggest investment you can make though is in yourself, in your own mindset you have to get your riding right, plan ahead, and observe, observe, observe.

If you're in control of the vehicle then 99.999% of the time, then you can be in control of your own destiny; always annoys me when people say "there was nothing I could do"; sure it may have been other person's 'fault' but uncountably the accident could have been avoided.

Sometimes there really is nothing you can do. I was riding home the other night when a deer ran out in front of me. Two options - slam on the brakes or swerve. It had just started raining, the road was slippery so I swerved and just clipped it. A bent mirror was the only casualty.

Advanced training, good observation and smooth riding helps, but there is always a time when it comes down to luck.

Must admit, my 'major' off could have been avoided, but the first incident I am not so sure of. I was riding slowly around a sharp left hander, but as it was dark, I could possibly have hit something on the road (they had been hedge cutting a couple of days earlier). As I don't know what happened I truthfully cannot say whether I did something wrong or it was just unfortunate.
At least one thing, when you come off it doesn't hurt instantly, you have quite a while before the pain sets in Laughing

been riding for over 30 years (i know my arse should be numb by now Razz ), been over 3 car bonnets due to folks pulling out on me (i was going too quick on the one occasion), chopped a telegraph pole down with a combo (it ran out in front of me, honestly Mr. Green ), stuffed a goldwing under the back end of a car when a woman pulled out in front of me....

had the usual numerous spills trying to stuff it into corners too quick or outbraking myself...

i still ride like i stole it tho Mr. Green

edit..
anything i may have crashed offroad doesn't count as they're accepted as part of playing Razz

Only had one spill in the year i've been riding but that was down to poor road conditions on the bend I was on at the time and both my wheels sliding out from under me causing a lowside. Was only a low speed one but now i've got the bike back on the road i'm far more cautious about greasy roads and poor road conditions. Good bit of experiance in an odd way I guess.
