Old ladies insisting on giving you money.

I changed an old lady's tyre for her today. She didn't have RAC cover and had a completely flat tyre, and the nearest tyre shop was miles away, so I put the spare on.

But why, when I'd finished, did she absolutely insist on giving me a fiver for my trouble? It's a Saturday afternoon, and if I hadn't been helping her, I'd only have been sitting on my arse smoking weed.

Grr. I'm not sure if it's right to feel bad when someone gives you money for doing something, but I stopped because I wanted to help her, not because I wanted to make a few quid. For some reason it really peeved me

I've had this before, when I stopped for some random young women ( ) that were having car problems.

They wouldn't let me go with out giving me cash, so I asked for a name and address and sent them flowers with a note saying that 'No thanks was needed'

Same happened to me when I escorted a wee lady in her car (me on bike) from west hampstead to queens park tube station. Took me about 10 minutes and I was out for a wee ride anyway. Thrust a tenner in my face when I got her to Queens Park and had an expression of disgust when I politely declined, stating I was just doing a good deed.

Whatever.

Wish I took that tenner though, that woulda paid for decent grub that night

money is a sign of appreciation in this day and age. a simple thanks is too simple and is overly used in todays world. sometimes when someone does a good deed, it is also so rare. i mean there are people in the world that will not even get out of their cars to ask if you are alright after a crash.

I fail to understand. I have changed tyres for incompetent people many times, often without so much as a handshake. Take whatever you can get. Rarely is anything for free.

You did something out of a total act of altruism as a good samaritan,
expecting no physical reward. A heart-felt thank-you leaves one

By insisting you take £5 recompense the lady devalued your kindness in your eyes.

In fact it was worse than that, because if she truly wanted to
recompense you properly for your labour, the value of your labour
would have been what it would have cost her to call out KwikFit, or
whoever. So, she actually unwittingly insulted you.

I'm all for free help and regularly do good deeds. But i am now off it for life, was out on the drink the other night and was walking home and there was this woman like 40 year old and she could hardly stand and so we offered to get her home (it was like 4 doors down) but she said she has to go in the back door.

Anyway gets her to her back door and she all of a sudden becomes sober, opens the back gate and 3 lads come out which isnt a problem, in the process i lose half a tooth but who needs them anyway, it must have been a house party or something because about 30 lads come out the house and just stood in the back lane by then there was only two of us. I swear on my life i have never ran so fast, when i stopped i cudnt breath and managed to do about 2 mile in 3 minutes not bad for a fat lad lol

When I used to work at a video store many moons back I used to regularly drop by old folks places to help them tune in their tvs etc.
Would often get gifts turn up when I got back to work.

The strangest one was old Keith who was pushing 80 at my best guess and was suffering alzheimer's . His remote had busted so i said I'd duck out and get him an all in one from the local.
He insisted I have more than enough money to cover it and wouldn't listen to me when I said 150 was way too much.

Upon returning and writting out instructions for him he tried to make me take another 100 on top of the 100 or so I still had in change.
Funny old bugger didn't believe me when I said that none was needed and that I already had over that in change.
While he had plenty of money it wasn't really needed but I understood from the gesture that it was something he wanted to do for me in return.

Ran into him a few years later at the servo and said hello. He remembered my face and asked if we used to work together to which I gave an affirming nod and let him on his way


Don't take offense to it mate a fiver might mean quite a bit to her and while I know you didn't need it she wanted to do something for you in return.

Now you're five in front and know you've done something good for a complete stranger

Many moons ago when I was working for Reality doing Argos deliveries I used to deliver to a lot of old people who would order through the catalogues, frequently they'd have a problem of some kind. Be it needing the furniture moved into a specific room upstairs or something (we were strictly to the door or ground floor room only), or having something totally unrelated to the delivery like not being able to get the tv onto video etc takes them a year me 10 seconds so no skin off my nose.
You'd often get them trying to offer you money for helping them, a lot of the time the first "no thanks it's alright" is enough for them to take it back but some just won't take no for an answer.

One old lady had ordered some fancy multi-part vaccum cleaner and couldn't figure out how to put it together, so she'd ordered a replacement, god knows why.
Anyway she explained this so I just assembled the original one for her which took about 5minutes and took the new one back as a return, she gave me a couple of quid and I said that I didn't want any money but she wouldn't have it so I accepted it. It can be very frustrating when you want to give someone money and they keep throwing it back so I decided to just take it even though I didn't want to.

I find it interesting that some people would feel uncomfortable accepting money for helping someone out.

The whole thing around tipping is sort of interesting. You are expected to tip in restaurants not as a treat for someone going above and beyond but just as a matter of course. It doesnt quite feel right to me, but if I've had particularly good service, I quite like to tip.

I was talking with someone yesterday about tipping barstuff in pubs. Its more of a matey thing, as you tell them to have one for themself or whatever. She works in a pub so is used to it and think I should try it. Its more of a friendly thing than restaurant tipping.

Part of it though seems a little demeaning a bit if its like hear little man, have a pound.

Some people are more free and easy with their money, and I think I might like to try this pub tipping thing.

She did say though, the first time she did it, it did feel a bit like being a little old lady who gives a kid some coins and tells them to get some sweets.

I reckon I'd feel a bit like that.

However, if I wasnt a tight git, and someone had helped me out of a fix, I'd probably feel quite good about giving them a fiver, even if they then didnt know whether they should accept it or not.

In the past I think I've bought people a drink or two for helping me out, which feels more natural than handing over money.

Often the satisfaction of knowing you have helped someone is enough reward for the helper, and money just creates an awkward moment, but as the helpee, its nice to show your gratitude particularly if sorting it out another way would have costed quite a bit more.

I once gave someone £150 as thanks after they had given me information that helped me push for a higher price on a house sale that got me several more thousands.

£150 wasnt much considering the amount I had gained as a result, and having worked in sales jobs where you work on commission, some kind of reward for the 'lead' felt appropriate. As tips go though its probably more than most people expect.

The person was quite happy accepting it, as they could appreciate that they had helped me get quite a bit extra that I probably wouldnt have got otherwise. A nice bit of tipping that made both people happy.
