I'm fully aware that i'm leaving myself open to a torrent of abuse here, but fuck it, i'm well chuffed and other people get to be vain, so why can't I? Laughing

Anyway, earlier this year (April 8th to be precise) I decided I was fed up with being: -

A) In the overweight BMI category.
B) The "Token fat lad" in my circle of friends.
C) A much larger shadow of my former self.

So I decided to take it upon myself to really give it a good go at loosing weight (which i'm sure many you have read before). I wasn't majorly fat, however every 6 months I was edging closer and closer to that dreaded "obese" category. My love with food was tightening. It started mainly because I gave up all physical activity. I then quit smoking so I put on about 2 stones in weight and becoming a student ensured much too much beer was being consumed on a daily basis.

It was going to take some personal dedication and believe me, quitting smoking was sooo much fricking easier than this. Having an addiction to nicotine was one thing, trying to avoid the luxuries of the very ingredient that keeps humans alive and to a certain extent; kicking was going to be a mammoth task. I decided I wasn't going to pick a diet and stick with it, but to make wholesale lifestyle changes. Some of which more recently have began to be pushed to their limits due to the lifestyle I revolve around.

So, here is a photo of me in September 2007. I was about 13 stone and a half, but by April 2008, I was 13 stone 2. I'm 5 foot 10ish so this was quite a lot of weight for that height. My body fat was about 20-odd percent.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v93/JonBod/000_0102.jpg

Not a pretty sight, I agree. People had been noticing for years I had been gaining weight, but I stuck myself in the category of "I don't give a fuck, pass me another Papa Johns Pizza." I'm fully aware I was nowhere near as fat as a lot of people, I wasn't even obese. But as someone who had been slim up until the age of about 16 I looked drastically different. When I went out in town I become really self conscious, which I guess was a really stupid and dare I say it; feminine thing to do. However I used to have a lot of confidence and so this took quite a knock.

Fast Forward to April 2008. I started initially by joining a fitness service called "British Military Fitness" which i'm sure many of you have heard of before. Anyway I was doing this 3 times a week and was enjoying it. It was hard, but not impossible. In fact within two months I had progressed to the advanced group of runners. However I quit after two months because I was the only really young person there and it was quite cliquey. So I decided to take up running solo instead. Did this for a few weeks at uni and by the time I left uni for summer in Mid June, I was 12 stone. I felt great loosing a stone and people were starting to notice a visual change (however I wasn't!!!)

Back home in Somerset I carried on with the running, I was only running about 3 - 5 miles a day but I felt I was doing OK. Started getting quite enthusiastic for it until I went to Spain for two weeks. I had a nice relaxing holiday but once I got back I lost motivation for running, but I had made it down to 11 stone 7, which I was happy about. My target weight initially was 11 stone as I thought this would be a nice weight, so I was nearly there (My target was set to be 11 stone by xmas 2008, so I surpassed myself there Laughing )

Through the summer I was working quite hard in a chippy at the Wildlife Park in Somerset, even got promoted to retail team leader of the venue (woo yay), was keeping my calorific intake down to about 1500-2000 calories a day. Making sure I had a decent breakfast everyday. By the end of summer I was looking and feeling much better and did two weeks hard graft at my Dad's butchery from 6 in the morning til 4.30. Really hard work and the scales told me so, I lost another 4 pounds in two weeks. Shocked

So it's October now, just past 6 months since I started to change my life. I've finally managed to stabilise my weight and now go on the scales at 10 stone 2 pounds. Meaning I lost 3 stone in 6 months, which i'm really proud of. I know people have lost more, but i'm finally at a place I want to be. I've gone down from a 38" Jeans size, down to a 30" and need a belt. My BMI is in the healthy zone I think it is about 20, down from 27. My fat percentage is 9.4% fat, safe limits are from 8-19%.

The only downsides are: -
A) I'm really fucking weak (Started training on weight at the gym to gain muscle bulk)
B) I have absolutely no wardrobe anymore (but on the upside it means I get to buy loads of new clothes)
C) People seem to think I have an eating disorder (funny how when you are spiralling upwards they don't get concerned with the associated health threats with obesity)

I get a little embarrassed when people comment on how much weight I have lost, but at the same time it really made the effort worthwhile. Whilst it was a personal achievement, I couldn't have done it without the support of my darling fiancée, my family and all of my friends.

Some of you are probably bored out of your wits end and no doubt i'll get some slack for being slightly vain, but I was looking at photos of myself on Facebook and was astonished at how much weight I had lost.

Here is a photo from last week, with my girl Shell. Very Happy

Fair play to you bro...thats dedication for ya. Thumbs Up
I think its hard to really push through the initial burn of it all and set a goal, because the results dont come easy.

If im honest ive been thinking about a new routine for ages now, but wit work and play time taking up all my hours im unsure how to do it.
Im 11 stone, 5'9. But i have a beer belly. This has given me some inspiration to work on it. You lost a lot of weight man and when ive read magazines with similar weight loss it was over a much longer period of time.

Very inspiring, Jon! Well done you! Very Happy

Glad you could keep up the running even after BMF. I couldn't, just found it too boring, so I can't post a similar success story.

I found it boring as well. I no longer do running. Fortunately my housemate loves the gym, so I am signed up to the university gym which is really cheap anyway and we go 3 times a week.

I also play football twice a week now.

People ask me for advice quite a lot, but I can't really offer any as it involves a complete change in lifestyle. But one thing I really would recommend is eating a proper breakfast every morning. Cereals etc. I try and get 5 pieces of fruit and veg in a day aswell.

5 foot 10.

So at 13 stone 2 at that height my BMI was 26.49 which is overweight.

10 stone 2 BMI is 20.42

BMI isn't always a good measurement as muscle weighs more than fat, but i'm average build so it is a good template.

I know these stories are great, and fuckin' well done Jon Thumbs Up

You rarely see the reverse happen though.

I'm 6'1, and fluctuate between 9 3/4 stone, and just under 10. (Usually whether Ive got jeans on or not Laughing )

I want to start building my weight up, but its fuckin' hard to find the motivation to really do it.

Im not particularly happy with my weight, but Im not unhappy with it either tbh. Probably where I fail where motivation is concerned.

And, I honestly believe its easier to eat less everyday than it is to eat more everyday. My body just rejects (not literally) food after a certain point.

Anyways, really pleased for ya Jon, nice one Thumbs Up Karma

I'm 6'2" and 21 stone. My problem is that I just need to grow a few inches taller then I would be ok.

Nice one Jon Thumbs Up

But your BMI being 20, that makes you borderline underweight lol.

You shouldn't trust BMI anyways, mine says 26 and there isn't an ounce of fat on me Laughing

20 is alright, especially if his lost weight though exercise and healthy eating, Perfect is supposed to be between 18.5 and 24.9.
I'm 23.5 but I'm lucky as I have a really fast metabolism so don't have to try hard.

Well done Jon you skinny bastard Wink Thumbs Up

Well done fella, I have gone through a similar process to yourself, I started the year weighing in at a hefty 15'6lbs!! which for 5'11" was far too fat ....worryingly a few years ago i was 17'5lbs!!!!

I, like you was fed up with being a fatty, the butt of jokes and even more so just being so unfit that i was out of breath walking up stairs. I joined a gym just before Christmas but didnt really start in earnest until New Year.

I stopped eating takeways, stopped eating sweets, crisps, chocolate bars and cut down on my beer intake. I started going to the gym upto 6 times a week and really working hard on Cardio/fat loss .

I have calmed the routine down a fair bit now and am concentratin on gaining strength but so far i have lost nearly 3 1/2 stone and am down to about 11'11lbs. I have also lost 8 inches off my waist, going from a 38" to 30"

The change you feel in everyday life is great and its great going into shops and buying size S instead of XL or even XXL like before!!

Anyway, what i mean to say is well done and there is no excuse for anyone being a fatty anymore!!
