i used to have a guitar but sold it a few years ago, thinking about gtting another one but i dont have hundreds f pounds to throw at it

i know there are guitar kits you can pick up from argos for £1.49 but im guessing these will be cheap pieces of tat and id do better to draw a guitar on £5 notes.

so are there any good beginner guitar/amp sets for less than say £200?

just to last me long enough to decide whether i want to spend 800 on a nice set

after an electric guitar btw.

Avoid Argos for guitars at all costs!

I'd recommend this:

https://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_0301605406.html

Or this:

https://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_PPEGENJREBCH1.html

Or anything on here:

https://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/Starter_Guitar_Packs.html

At least it's a proper music shop and a cheap one at that, I've used Andertons before and they're great, no trouble at all.

There's plenty of choice on that page so it's up to you wether you want a strat type guitar with single coil pickups (twangier sound) or a Les Paul/SG type guitar with humbucker pickups (meatier sound). A starter guitar would probably benefit from a setup at your local guitar shop as they're generally just mass produced and chucked in boxes and shipped out but seriously avoid any catalouge type places and stick to reputable brands like Squire/Epiphone/Ibanez and you shouldn't go too far wrong.

thanks for that, i was thinking of something along the same lines.

https://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/Guitars/Electric_Guitars/Beginner/sc1047/p2218.aspx

is a shop near me, price looks good. i guess that could be okay for the couple of months i need it

what you reckon?

Personally I'd spend up to£200 on a Yamaha and get a sh1tty second hand amp from ebay for as little as possible. Infact just buy a Yamaha and leave the amp for now and buy a line 6 pod for around £80 and put head phones straight in. Practice amps aren't worth a w@nk.

how about a line6 toneport ux1, so i could plug it into the pc and use the software as an amp then play through pc headphones/speakers. seems like a good idea. im guessing my pc will just act as an amp?

Whatever has the best sounds for you. Both pods and toneports have headphone sockets built in. I think the pods have more sounds but the toneport has recording software built into it. Even a pocket pod with headphones would be better than practice amp.

Good idea to avoid the practice amp, I think you'd very quickly get frustrated about not being able to get a good sound, clean or distorted, out of one, whereas with an effects processor you'll get a real good sound, albeit through the headphones, but you can save up money in the mean time for that big marshall stack Twisted Evil

As for which guitar, they'll prob be more or less the same at that price range so why not go for an Ibanez (well, I would).

+1 for Yamaha. I have a Pacifica 112, Strat copy, like this one :- https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/yamaha-pacifica-112_W0QQitemZ260297573182

Bought mine off eBay, with a Marshall amp, for £90. A dad had bought it new for his son who played it once. It still had the plastic film and sticker on the scratch plate Thumbs Up

I think you would get far more for your money if you had around £300.

£200 on a second hand fender mex strat/tele or epiphone and £100 on the amp vox 15 /fender champ or roland cube

Played a cheap Ibanez years ago, worst guitar I'd ever laid hands on. But it was about 15 years ago though. Laughing Squires play a lot better imo.

As said, avoid Argos!!
Epiphone les pauls/sg's are very good for the money, new i think you can pick one up for about £300, second hand probably about £200.
You could always upgrade the pick ups after if you want better sounds.
Yamaha Pacifica's are also good though, ive played a couple and they felt a lot better than Fender Squires. Thumbs Up

most people seem to think the yam pacifica is a good one, might go for that. with the line 6 toneport PC software hardware thingy.

cost be about 250 which is slightly more than i initially wanted to pay. but hopefully will last me a lot longer than a standard 'beginner kit' usually would.

Yamaha have a nasty habit of making decent guitars at reasonable prices that take an absolute pounding.

I have had my Yamaha RBX260 Bass for over 10 years now and it's still blummen luvverly. Cool

Yea, can't go wrong with a Yamaha 012 or 112 pacifica. 112's are better quality as made in a different country but obviously more expensive.
You only need a basic 10 watt amp, again like said above you can't go wrong with a marshall.
Once you start to get a bit better and start getting a bit bored get yourself an effects pedal.

Daz.

Those fancy electric ones don't plug into my laptop and drive Reason via MIDI too good though, without forking out £££ Smile

www.gear4music.com

People slate Vintage, but I have a 6 string and a bass (heavily modded) by them, and I can't fault 'em.

Yamaha, Squier or Epiphone - you won't go wrong with any of their guitars and you'd probably not really outgrow them much. Park also make nice little amps under license from Marshall. Thumbs Up
