My friend (Chris, but I don't think anyone on here knows him) had a black rs50 stolen last week from his house. He has been on the look out for a week now but no joy. When it was first stolen he reported it to the police and insurance. Sort of given up hope of it being found so he was wondering how long it will take and how much he will be payed out by the insurance, he had insured it for £1000.

Any ideas?

The value he said it's worth means fuck all, they will give him book price maybe less. If it was in good nick and he has pics he may get more. He will not get money for any mods unless they were declared.

https://www.parkers.co.uk/motorbikes/used-prices/Valuation.aspx?plate=77&deriv=6540

So £700 is the minimum?

theoretically but insurance companies are known to be cunts.

Although I got paid out after a month and 2 days of my crash and got a loads more than I was expecting.

He can haggle by finding expensive RS50's on eBay and BikeTrader (etc). Make sure he says his RS50 was in mint condition with extremely low mileage. It's true that you can't list modifications, but servicing and keeping it in tip-top running order isn't a "modification"

My mate had his bike stolen (not Graham) and we said that it had just been fully serviced, with new tyres, brake pads, plugs (etc) and got the price bumped up an extra £300 as he'd need to do all that to the new bike he bought too...

If you come across as genuine enough, it works (or it did in that situation -- I did the talking). Wink

I was told me the engineer that examined my bike the service history means fuck all in the insurers eyes which pissed me off as I had spend £700 on that bike a month or so before the crash.

Lying about milage is dodgey as if they find the bike they could kick up a fuss.

I dropped my CBR 4 times in a week before my crash cos i was practicing 180 stoppies, it got bent/scuffed from that, and i also chopped the screen down too.

Week later i got knocked off, insurance guy comes round, clocks are destroyed so i decided it had only done 5000 miles, it had done 13.

Then i went on to say how mint it was and how well maintained it was, 2 weeks later a phone call and they gave me £1550 and let me keep the bike, this is for a 96 CBR bear in mind.

cool thing is, i only payed 1K for the bike when it was mint. Laughing

Does this work the other way round, if a bike is insured for an amount, but the book price says it's worth more? I doubt it, but just wondered.

mine was insured for £1000 with £350 excess !
assessor valued it at £1250 so i got £900 Smile Result.

don't know how they work it out but there doesn't seem to be a correlation between what you value it at what the assessor does.

The value of bikes change, believe it or not! This is why your valuation means very little to the insurance company.

Haha if this country is ever stupid enough to allow you a driving license again, you'll be paying that amount for the rest of your life on 125's. Laughing
