Engine bars Vs Bungs

What offers better protection for the machine? Engine bars or crash bungs? I know R&G's are designed to break and that's how they save the bike but how do engine bars hold up?

It really can depend on the bike. Engine bars look after the bottom of the bike well, but will hold it higher of the deck, so may do a bit more damage to the bars, clocks, top fairings etc which are now on the floor with a bit more force.

Some mushrooms can be useless really, others can do a surprisingly good job, there are just so many variables. Best bet is to ask someone who has binned the bike in question, find out what was damaged and try to protect those areas.

Best bet is to try to not come off!!!!!

you can't beat a full set of R&G's. they will save loads in the long run but obviously won't save bent forks if you hit something lol.

some of the cheaper ones will do more damage than good imo.

but as said, it depends on the bike.

depends on how fast you bin it, a lot of race teams dont use crash bungs because they are know to make the bike flip while sliding causing even more damage then if you had none at all, for a low speed fall or toppling over in the garage they can be useful tho

Bars offer more protection IMO. Some crash bungs do more damage than good.

R&G's have saves me loads of damage in at least 3 crashes. Every bike I get now will have them.


Bars are ok, but I have found they can bottom out if you lean alot.

Naked bikes look at bit silly with bungs. Bars tend to look more at home.

XJR's are lovely bikes - I really want one, but a bit too bulky for the London commute!

Seen some engine coloured bars on the net as opposed to chrome bars. F*cked if I can find them now though.

Yeah - SE London doesn't have any decent roads into London, the A2 is narrow and rammed with traffic. Not too sure on the weight either. I'm a bit puny!
