Anyone been to Barcelona?

If so, where abouts did you stay? Im looking at some 2 star hotels/hostels, cant afford much more, but staying for 5 nights at the start of November(5th to 10th). Budget is £300 for the hotel, at the very most.

Anyways, wondered if the BCF Encyclopedia has any advice on where to stay. Going to be me and the girlfriend, we've already booked the flights, 2 returns for £56! Thumbs Up

We just want to explore the city, and get away for a little while.

If there's no advice on where to stay, is there any advice on where we shouldnt stay? Wanna know a few places to avoid etc. Will narrow the hunt down at least.

Cheers folks Karma

Excellent choice, I loved Barcelona when I went. Definitely want to go again soon.

I can't remember exactly where the best and worst places are, I do remember the area around the bottom of las ramblas (closest to the harbour) turning into a bit of a red light district after a certain time though. Was kinda funny, the further down you got the worse they looked until at the bottom were some very odd looking blokes Shocked

If you aim for the Gothic quater though you should be sorted as it's about the best area to start from although I'm not sure on prices.
Other advice I'm sure you've been given is be very aware of pickpockets on public transport and las ramblas. They are VERY clever and well versed, las ramblas is such a nice part of the city but beware of who's standing around you when you are looking at the street performers
Thumbs Up

Just don't eat at any McDonalds in the city !

When i was there my son got hungry and we stopped at this maccy d only for him to find 3 live cockroaches in his Not so Happy Meal.

Took it back the guy just reached in removed the roaches and handed it back. Shocked

and its one f*cked up place after dark.

enjoy Smile

Barcelona is awesome, fantastic city.

I stayed in a hotel just 20mins away by train from the main city centre. the train took us to Plade de la Catalunya which leads to La Rambla.
The hotel i stayted at was in a place called Molins De Rei

It was f**king alright and i would stay there again.
I would definatly not stay in a hovel on La Ramble. it was too f**king noisey. enjoy your sh*t Thumbs Up

Will definately avoid maccys! Shocked

That was the complete opposite of my experiance. The city seemed safe at night, alot safer than any shithole in this country.

Ta, i assume the swearing is to really emphasise how good it is. I hope Laughing

We dont mind noise, being 19, we enjoy the nightlife just as much as going around by day and taking pics and sightseeing. Perfect balance.

However...I'm quickly leaning towards wanting a cuppa tea and a cuddle as opposed to going out. Cool God help me Shocked

during the day found it a great place was just at night it turned creepy.
Driving however was hilarious and judging by the various dents and no rubber left on the hire cars tyres i had way to much fun Thumbs Up

Don't get me wrong I think that the city was truely brilliant, just be wary as you have to be in most big cities as a tourist.

I don't remember cockroach burgers but then we didnt have happy meals, must've been the toy they were giving away that week Wink

The gothic quater is one hell of a cool place at night, as the name suggests it kinda gets spooky in certain areas around the old buildings.
The Nightlife was one of the main good things about the place, and that it was a city with a beach! You don't see too many of them Thumbs Up

Do NOT miss la segrada famillia though, i think you have to pay to climb up inside the towers but it is well worth it! Gaudi park too is very cool.

If you do want to get about the buses are ok but I think the taxi's aren't too expensive. As always, try to use as much of their language as possible, they end up being much friendlier if you are at least trying Laughing Probably best not to get a scoot while you're there as the roads are a tad manic and the surface isn't all that grippy. Unless you're daftly confident or just daft it isn't quite worth it!

for getting about, i recommend their underground, or whatever they call it. you know like the tube

also make sure you have some patates bravas

slightly spicy fried potatoes that are ace

i think staying a bit away from the centre and then going in by tube, is going to mean a better nights sleep

Be wary of people who want to come up and chat to you. I had two blokes trying to be friendly while trying to get my wallet.

Keep your money and cards in your front trouser pocket, not your back trouser pocket.

go see this building its amazing

Sagrada Família

Someone was being friendly to Colin, he knew something dodgy was happening.

I've been there a few times - two recommended Hotels for...

1. On a budget - Hotel Condal (my opinion HERE)

2. Impressing the Missus - H10 Barcelona

The Condal is VERY central and relatively basic but still quite quiet and more importantly clean. The H10 is out of the centre but a classy joint, champagne on arrival (the real stuff, not fizzy pop) with strawberry's, pillow's the size of mini cooper's and shower's so powerful they'll take your face off Thumbs Up

In addition to the above...

Go see the the aquarium at Maremagnum (something like that..) by the marina at the bottom of the Ramblas.

If you like football then you have to do the Nou Camp tour. You wander around the stadium and then have entry into the best football museum in the world.

Get a multitrip Metro pass. Its usable on the underground and trams (maybe even the buses) which is unlike public transport in this country ie great!

If you like seafood then eat in Barcaloneta.

Do not buy pints in the bars along Port Olympica, 8euro for a beer made me cry a little. DO go into the Baja Beach Bar just below the Golden Whale, when the bell goes you'll know why I sent you there Smile
