but if i pass my test at the end of this month i am looking to upgrade to a 250cc bike and i was wondering what people would recommend.
i have been looking at the hornet 250 and the ninja 250 but was just looking for some more ideas,

I don't know much about what's available in 250cc, Spend a bit of time on MCN, they seem to have quite comprehensive reviews.

I like the Ninja although apparently the OEM tyres are a bit sh!t.

There's also the CBR 250 and the Hyosung GT250R (ridden one and got one sat in my garage)

The Hyosung is a good bike but will be more expensive to buy atm.

CBR250 would be sweet. Can't go wrong with the Hornet though, although the 600 is a better deal Wink

Will you still be limited to 33bhp?

Good luck finding a CBR250! Plus they're over 33bhp. Otherwise, nice bike!

The ninja 250 is THE 250 bike to have. 2008 is all sold out, so you may have to wait a bit to get one.

the ninja 250 is slighty over the 33bhp limmit though because of the power to weight restriction.

The 2008+ 250r is a 33bhp legal bike:
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bikereviews/searchresults/Bike-Reviews/Kawasaki/Kawasaki-250R-Ninja-2008-current/

I've got the hyo gt125 and it's a good bike (not ridden much else to compare it to, but I'm very happy with it), the hyo 250 is the same bike with a bigger engine so it can't be bad. I'm probably going to get a ninja 250r though just for a change.

Laughing

I think I'd rather ride pretty much ANY 250 other than the bland soul-less consumerised 'Ninja' 250.

Wrong. The power-to-weight limit is 0.16kW/kg. This means that if you want the full 33bhp then the bike has to weigh more than 156kg. The Ninja makes 32bhp and weighs 154kg...giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 0.156kW/kg.

As you can see it falls just, and only just, inside the power-to-weight limit.

true, but by my reckoning 55bhp > 33bhp.

The Ninja has already been mentioned, as has the mental Aprilia RS250. There are a few other old 250 race reps, but they're all high maintenance. Hyosung do a number of 250s (a race rep, a naked bike and a cruiser) and a few other companies also do cruiser-style ones (or did them, so they're available 2nd hand). So I'll go over four more options, all Hondas.

CBF250
https://www.bikez.com/pictures/honda/2006/22479_0_1_2_cbf%20250_Image%20credits%20-%20Honda.jpg
Basic commuter 250, single cylinder, only about 20bhp. Reasonable number about for not a lot of money

CB250
https://www.manualesdemotos.net/catalog/images/CB-250.jpg
Preceded the CBF250, twin cylinder, roughly the same power as the CBF, obviously cheaper as it's older.

Hornet 250
https://www.bikez.com/pictures/honda/2002/20165_0_1_2_hornet%20250_Image%20by%20Honda.%20Published%20with%20permission..jpg
You've already mentioned it, has about 44bhp derestricted to my knowledge, so you'd have to get a restricted one. Does crazy high revs! Looks cool too.

VTR 250
https://www.motorsports-network.com/HONDA/models/vtr2502.jpg
Bit of a different choice this one. Fairly rare, as they're an import. V-twin, looks like a mini Ducati Monster. 32bhp, so just under the limit.

Thumbs Up

What speeds you looking at with those hondas?

I'd probably be looking at a new Yamaha WR250X if i was looking for a 33bhp 250cc bike. I doubt for commuting and riding in town and down the back lanes, that you could have as much fun on another 250cc bike available currently?

You could build your own 250cc supermoto, from say a Honda XR250 or Kawasaki KLX250, (They even do a ready made one called the D-tracker), if you wanted an SM bike, a bit cheaper.

But choosing my favourite 250cc bike of all time, based upon looks alone, then it would have to be a Yamaha TZR250R (V-twin). It was the most beautiful 250cc race replica of them all!

I am sure I read on one of the launch reviews (bike or ride) that it was over the power to weight limit. Its likely I am wrong, but check with a dealer before putting money down.

Yamaha WR250 or a Honda VTR250 would be the only sub33bhp 250's I would buy. I may consider the hyosung.

Remember that the 32bhp is claimed at the crank, so only around 27-28 will actually make it to the rear wheel meaning it comfortably falls inside. Especially when you consider its dry weight is 154kg, so it's wet weight would be at least anothre 20kg on top of that.

Google some images for a Honda BROS. 400cc, and exactly 33hp so right on the limit and no need for restriction

According to what I can find on the interweb (sorry for the lack of standardisation for the figures, I'm just replicating what I've found):

CBF250 - 80mph, 1/4m in 16.5sec (sounds slow, but that's roughly equal to a Clio 172), 60mpg (sounds pessimistic for a single-cyl 250)
CB250 - 80mph, 1/4m in 17sec (Golf GTi Mk1 territory), 75mpg
Hornet - 110mph, 0-60 in 6sec ish (assume that's for the de-restricted version), can't find fuel figures
VTR250 - 90-95mph, 3.7l/100km (which in good ol' English is about 77mpg)

RS 250 isn't a newbie bike or under 33bhp, so pretty much a shit recomendation.
