Job Interview; Bald or Balding?

Thinking ahead here; I've got a telephone interview and if I do it right, will get a 'real' interview. In the past when trying to look 'respectable' I'll generally leave the hair I've got left to grow a bit.

However, is that a better look than my normal skin-head, now that shaved heads are becoming more acceptable?

Position is for a Software tester in a fairly new 'dynamic sounding' company.
While 'balding' may suggest some 'maturity', I also don't want to make it look like I'm too much older (and boring) than I am (29, now ); I'm at about the right point in my career* for the age I am and the jobs I'm going for.

*Well, if I'd spent less time playing with bikes and more time improving my career I'd be a bit further along!

be yourself, my other half used to smart up leave his hair to grow a little (Usually a skinhead) and still ended up not getting the job he wanted,

In the end he thought fuck it but then he got an interview where hed been informed that he needed to be booted and suited (hes never worn a suit in his life) he turned up in a brand new suit, shirt and a really snazzy blue tie, his shoes were polished till they shone.

complete with a Mohican haircut, showing off nicely the skull and thorn tattoo going down the side of his head and his titanium ear rings.

He got the job

When I've got as much money as Branson, I'll not care about my appearance either .

I suppose a few days worth of 'stubble' will say "I shave my head because I'm going bald" or something <shrugs>.
This could be a role that involves some customer contact, so such impressions probably do matter, but hopefully technical ability will matter more!

Although I shave my head when I've gone for interviews I let it grow slghtly just to take the harshness/hooligan look away, then when I turn up for the first day of work I've shaved it off again...

Suit & Tie, then your skin head will seem perfectly respectable. Turn up looking professional even if its above and beyond what their expecting, because it shows you carry yourself well. You can dress down once you get the job. I always meet clients wearing a suit now, for the first time, because I can always lower the bar once I have met them (i.e. further meeting can be casual if I feel they are that way inclined).

Just don't be the suit...Looking professional but showing no character just makes you another suit

It's not software testing companies specifically I'm working for/looking at edd; it's working as part of a development team as a Software tester for what ever software it is they sell . Rather not talk specifics right now in this thread .

Definitely suit and Tie. When going to site in my current job I've often turned up suited and booted to find an engineer from my company in torn jeans - generally err on the side of smartness, possibly because I'm actually particularly un-smart the rest of the time .

I try and get a bit of small talk going, though tend to be a bit crap with people I don't know as the only subject that we obviously have in common is work; saying that, I think maybe in my lat interview I may have done it a bit /too/ much (or craply).

When I first got the job in my current company I was interviewed looking appropriately smart; the other members of my then new department decided I was probably going to be overly-formal; how wrong they were when within a few weeks I'd crashed my bike on the way to work and turned up in ripped jeans with a little blood!

Luke; I'd suspect the scars may actually help - if you can mention early on about the eye and a car accident you could get a bit of a 'sympathy vote' (wouldn't go into details about the accident, though). May not be so good if you're applying to be an air traffic controller, or something, though .

I really panic that a potential employer might google me!

At one point if you googled my rather individual name a comment from myspace came up where I'd said something stupid messing about with a girl, can't remember what it was but it was something stupid.

Now if you google it you get fucking hundreds of links to gig listings I'm on/been on, which is still a bit of a problem really as they might realise I stay out late on week nights a lot.
