I'm after some turntables, and I can't decide, should I get CDJ or vinyl? I have found a nice set, Stanton T60 with Stanton mixer near me that I am interested in (£150), but can't help but think that CDJ maybe the better option for what I need.

I'm after playing hard house mostly, only a bedroom DJ nothing spectacular but I think if I got CDJ it would save money as I could just download music instead of buying vinyl after vinyl, but I want to stay traditional in the fact that vinyl is a proper DJs choice. Scratching would be kept to a minimal in any case but I would like to sample movies in the background like most artists do.

Any ideas?

Cheers. Thumbs Up

My advice? Don't bother with either.

Get VirtualDJ and use it to mix. It's dead easy to learn and will save you about £1500, the price of a pair of CDJs nowadays.

You would probably be better off getting a set of vinyl turntables... CDJ is the cheaper option, but in my opinion, it doesn't sound as "real" if you get my drift... And you can learn cooler things like scratching (which actually comes naturally after a while in my experience, as long as you have rhythm and a steady hand!) etc. And turntables look much cooler Cool

I would say if you're gonna get into it properly, get yourself some Technics, most of the range are really good, but can be quite pricey. Probably if you're only starting out, best of to get something a bit less complex... I dont think Gemini's are too bad, and yeah, Stantons, I have heard are pretty ok.

oooh, also... get a Behringer mixer... They are easy to use but still not so basic. Thumbs Up

Happy Hunting Smile

If your after some turntables i have a pair of Stanton STR8-150's for sale including a mixer for £300. Only reason for selling is i have no time for them anymore unfortunatly. The STR8-150's are a much better turntable than the T60's also, plenty of torque and the pitch is awesome, they as good as Technics 1210's if not better, but thats my oppinion.

My advice would be learn with vinyl and then when you can afford it have 1 cdj and 2 turntables.

Ok some good information there guys, I already have all the DJ programs on my PC just looking for something more hands on. Behringer mixer was my first choice as it goes because they look really good, with either a Stanton turntable or Vestax CDJ. Still not too sure which to choose!

Any more opinions/ideas?

May PM you about the STR8 150s bwfc, which mixer is it?. Thumbs Up

Don't be a cheat and use Virtual DJ, get some old skool vinyl and some respect from people who know.

Or you could get my dream set up, 2 40GB iPods and a Hercules mixing system.

Get some CDJ's. More practical, easier to burn music to disk to use and if you get good enough to work at club level you'll be accustomed to them.

My mates an excellent DJ in Leeds, and loves mixing records but ultimately at the big clubs he says it more and more common to find the the record decks being used to hold the DJ's drink. From a practical point of view there is not one good reason I can think that Vinyl is any better than CD's.

Why not get Vinyl and purchase Serato Scratch Live. Costs around £300, You get timecoded vinyls and it lets you stream all your mp3's from a computer/laptop to the vinyl, it also lets you manipulate and scratch as if it were the real thing. Plus you get all the functions of a CDJ from the press of a keyboard like Hotcues, loops etc. you also get to become familiar with beat matching with vinyl, as the two are somewhat different.

Like Craigie B said, Where as big cubs will customize your set up to your requirement, local pubs and clubs usually use the vinyl TT's for drink or CD holders. So the majority of them accommodate for Digital DJ's.

Yes, you will get a crisper sound and a revolving platter and steel build is much cooler then plastic and flashy lights, but try DJ'in from a kitchen in student hall party with 60 people who have just discovered the effects of MDMA in the past year and a half. Needle skipping can be a bastard, and you wont be shy to it once you got that many people in one room jumping off the walls. Lets be honest, this is where we all start.

I know what your thinking... Behringer DJX707...?.... £130?.... Bargain?? Stop right there... The only thing non basic about this thing is the effects section.. and thats because its a fecking nightmare. You cant use it without reading the manual. Build quality is pretty pish as well, the EQ ranges don't do what you want them to, and the BPM counter is so bad its pointless. Vestex do good quality cheap mixers, but personally i recommend the Pioneer DJM400, Ideal entry level mixer, Professional build, good easy to use effects, wont get bored of it for a good while, ill tell you that.

If your going to get Vinyl TT, buy the 1210's. Bit pricey yeh, but they will practically last a lifetime. So not a bad investment. There industry standard, which is useful when you go into a club, you can immediately be familiar with all the equipment.

Heres other Industry standard equipment...

PIONEER DJM600/DJM800
PIONEER CDJ800/CDJ1000

Remember, no matter how talented you can be, you can never be pro on amateur equipment. All this gear is well worth the money if your serious about DJ'in.

Where as if you have just fecked about on VDJ and gone threw the frustration of doing every function in linear form by clicking your mouse. Buy a midi controller, Vestex have the VCI range which is worth checking out, comes with a version of Serato aswell. Or you could just go with the simple option of buying Numark Cue Control, you can pick it up anywhere like PC world or Argos, having this bit of kit will certainly broaden your horizons, and will give you the tools you need to start recording stuff, which is what you want really if your just practicing right now.

Oh, the only thing wrong with building a Vinyl record collection.... Record shops are slowly closing down, There's a lot more stuff out on mp3... Move with the times..

Try www.thomann.de for DJ gear, their based in germany. I once picked up a brand new pair of CDJ800's for £845! they are something like £1049 RRP here.
