Don't see the issue, other than the passport thingy though I suppose that's until we all have ID cards. My T-mobile PAYG sim is registered to me and to my debit card for the convenience of paying on-line or by text.

Its a bit crap when your like me and havnt updated your passport, how much is a passport anyway? I kinda long for the photo to look the same as it did a decade ago on my new one but thats not going to happen.

How is this going to work, they've already said there's 72million phones in the UK, and a large majority are PAYG, if this only applies to new phones that's still probably 40million existing ones that are untraceable, and there's even more unregistered PAYG simcards lying around rather than phones, i've got 4 vodafone ones in my draw. And if it's just handsets that need registering why not buy one abroad to bypass it.

Just sounds like another half arsed idea to me that will do absolutely nothing to prevent crime and terrorism, just yet again increases what they can apparently legally subject every citizen to.

Give it a few years and we'll all have to give a fingerprint, retina scan and have our photograph taken at the Tesco checkout when we buy a cutlery set that includes a knife or a box of nails or any type of chemical that could have the remotest use to someone making a bomb.

It's a bit silly really, what happens when you sell your pay as you go phone to a terrorist, then you'll get yourself arrested. Seems like another law to screw over honest citizens to me, but I guess it isn't unexpected.

Also, have you wondered why there are adverts on the radio offering to buy back your mobile phone? Call me a cynic if you like.

Can't quite see how anyone's rights have been suppressed - even this alarmist story can't do better than ascribe the idea to an unnamed 'Whitehall Official'. No member of the government seems to be involved, and it certainly isn't law yet. The only people who have been named in the story are people whose jobs are reliant on public concern about privacy - although I'm sure none of them would stoop to exaggerating a political non-starter to give their position greater credibility........

Criminals/Terrorists who know about this proposed registration of mobiles will not be upgrading their phones so they look trendy, they'll be keeping or buying existing unregistered phones, don't think they care whether it has a 5MP camera.

As for buying abroad, yes Europe, this is a UK idea so not applicable in Europe. Just like if you want a gun, go over to Europe and get one. Even china sell cheapo mobile phones that work on European bands.
