So yeah I have a Yamaha YZF R125 and sometimes I can only seem to get it to around 70mph, I got told the bike goes 82mph indicated, any ideas?

dont go into the top gear too early and lie down, and find a big hill, with a trailing wind. i've had an indicated 85 (most likely lies) from my cbr with all the above so a yfz should beat that

Never ridden that bike, so no advice in particular. But the top speed that dealers, manufacturers mention, etc is kinda top speed "in theory" - i.e. ideal conditions, etc.

In theory, my ybr 125 should top out at 70. I've yet to see it passed 62, 63.

Are you a little porky? Perhaps lose some weight? Binding disc brakes? Parachute like clothing?

It could be no end of things, but I wouldnm't worry about it as I imagine very few riders of that bike have spent much time at its "top speed".

To be honest, after a few months you'll realise how academic it is and stop staring hopefully at the speedo. If the bike had a top speed of 160, and you were only reaching 70, then I'd think you'd be right to mull over this: otherwise, it's just arguing over fairies on needle tips.

I can do 130mph on my bike no problem, but I cant quite get it to the 155mph limit, what do I do? Confused

At the end of the day 70 is a good speed for the bike, if opportunity presents itself and the road long enough you can push it more, but psuhing it too much towards the 82 is not going to help it.

Enjoy it at 70 and the occassional push beyond and leave the higher speeds for bikes that want it.

hi i`ve had a full bike licence for nearly 20 yrs had scooters to start of with now riding a cbr600 ... i can seem to get it in me head that i can go a little bit faster round the corners lol HELP lol

I got about 83 on my mates one, my elbows were touching my knees though. Thumbs Up

What kind of boost you running chap?


End of the day its a 4stroke 125.
it aint going to be lightspeed compared to same size 2stroke equivilents.

I am the same height as you.
When I was 18 I was around 9.5 stone.
As the years have gone on I did hit 11 stone and a bit more.

The difference between 9.5 stone and 11 stone did make a difference to the 125cc bike I was riding at the time.
1.5 stone = 9.5 kg.

9.5 kg I think is equal to 9.5 litres of petrol in the tank.

Assuming my body has not become less aerodynamic due to weight gain.
See what the bikes like with a full petrol tank and then try it with 9.5 litres less petrol in it.
Weight seems to affect going up hills and acceleration the most.

What coat you are wearing, your chin on the tank and wind speed will all have an effect.
Try a long dead straight flat road and try to get head or back wind.
Try it in one direction and then turn the bike around and then try it in the other direction to make sure you get back wind.

I always seem to have found 125cc engines go slower in winter than summer. And drink more petrol.
I wonder if wind resistance is greater with colder air and if the engine can get up to full heat (saying that it could be a mixture problem which you will not have due to fuel injection).

Just for the hell of it try some Shell V Power petrol in the bike.
If not possible try BP Ultimate or Tesco 99. They all cost up to 7p a litre more than normal unleaded.
Loads of people will tell you the above petrol is a waste of money and will do nothing but I say try it and see what happens.

Also does you owners book tell you to fit a different spark plug for extended high speed riding or something simular?
If so fit that spark plug.

Have you checked the speedometer is accurate?

But at the end of the day you only have a 125cc 4 stroke developing less than 15 hp.

I found quoted speeds to be under, both the TDM and S4 quote top speeds of 135 and I have seen 140+ on the clocks of both of them.
