Today i was talking to my mother about the plans for a car, and that i want to get a slightly sporty car ( like an RX8 or Audi TT etc ), and for the first time ever she is saying to me "well you be carefull in a quick car.
Then it hit me
I dont think she realises how quick bikes are and how fast the bikes ive had and have been over the past 4 years, i tried to explain how much more dangerous the bike i currently have, which i think to be considerably more dangerous than any current IL4 1000 (souly down to the way in makes power and the fact i have to fight the bike not ride it).
I also explained how said cars, have many airbags, ABS, traction control as well as 4 fat tyres, but it didnt seem to get through.
And yes my mother is stupid ____________________ Ducati 1299 Panigale

Same with my Mum with the bike thing...
She never thought twice about me going out on the bikes with the lads.
Then she saw me on a spinal board after being zapped back to life
Now she can't even watch me ride off the drive way and the last time I asked her to come watch me on track she burst into tears
The dangers are now all too real to her but (and this is the bit I love her for) she's not once asked me to give up the bikes |

1. Please don't say stuff like that to your parents because I'm sure they worry enough as it is.
2. A fast car will only mean you'll spend hours explaining to your mates that your bike is much faster so you don't care about that tosser at the lights who done you in his Carrera 4S
3. My mum used to ride a bike and I would rather she didn't know what it's like because I'm constantly reassuring her..... ____________________ Kawasaki ER6n -> Honda CBR600RR -> Honda VTR 1000 -> Moto Guzzi Norge 1200

Whenever I'm talking about stuff I have done on my bike with mates or to my dad and my mum is there I tell her to put her hands over her ears.
She didn't at first after the 2nd or 3rd time she started to ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.

My parents don't seem to care much. When I told them I wanted a ped they helped me more than anything.
Then when I moved up the stages I always get the 'be careful' or 'ride safely' as I walk out the door but that's just what Mum's do I guess.
I tend to avoid talking about speeding, crashes around her etc, but I'm sure she knows. I have only once come home and said I need to go to A&E after a bike accident, they waited up till I got home as they were worried but I've never had them begging me not to get another one.

I don't ever explain to my mum how fast my bikes are capable of, I know currently I've only reached a 500cc but still.
When I left yesterday after my dad taking me to pick up my new ER-5 my mum couldn't watch me leave I saw her in the mirror burying her head into my dads shoulder. I know she worries a lot about me and for that simple reason I do what I can to re-assure her I'm safe, I'm even planning on taking up an IAM course or something just to prove I'm safe (apparently passing my test with only 1 minor after being told by my instructor I was already good enough to pass without lessons, isn't enough to show I'm safe ).
I honestly don't think mum's will ever stop worrying, its kinda their job. ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Present: 97 ER-5.

Well I'd prefer to treat my Mum as an adult to be honest, not some clueless fuckwit. I re-assure her, but she is also fully aware of what I get upto. Just in a nicer way than "Well, I braked a bit late, almost hit an Arctic and I thought the back end had gone walkies!" I know she'll work out what happened anyways.
I have slowly gravitated towards track-riding, but that didnt stop 3 years on only bikes from 17 years old. Mum had always been on bikes with my dad when they were 17/18/19 onwards, yet she still worried like fuck that I was getting one. But she never said no, or tried to stop me. The 'rents just made sure I fully understood the amount of responsibility I was under. I had a few small scuffles on my 125, the 'rents usually found out as soon as I got home, why would I hide it?
My mum's clued up, she knows what bikes are capable of, and I know she knows what I'm like. I'd like to think she has noticed my tendency of late to get more on track, hopefully lets her relax a little knowing I'm improving my riding. She's been to my trackdays, and worrying aside, she bloody enjoys it!
It would be naive to think parents are ever going to be 100% sorted with their offspring taking "unneccesary" risks.
Won't treat my mum like she's thick though.
However, people who just charge out with the mantra of "Cars are safer" really get on my tits! (exception for you wave )
How the fuck is a car safer if the person behind the wheel is a retard? If you cant be trusted to control a bike safely, where, please tell me (at no one in particular) is the sense in giving them a ton of metal to play with?? ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

The full bike test isn't a great indication you're a safe rider, so that seems fair enough . |

Yes! *celebrates*
Got there before you G. Suck on it!
I kid. However, I've lost count of the amount of times he has beat me to the punch. Probably without even knowing it. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

My dad doesn't mind too much, my mum didn't ever really want me to get a bike, but she knew that should couldn't stop me.
She's got used to it now though, just tells me to be careful when I go out on it like I suspect most mums do.
I don't think it's a good idea that she sees me on track though, but for some reason she wants to. ____________________ My Flickr |

Well, I think we already know that you know you're being contradictory, but thats not my point.
If, your son happens to actually want to ride bikes, you'll stop that dead will you? No compromise?
If, as I said, he wants to get on one, you'll probably find that telling him he cant will be the quickest way to get him on one.
Unless thats your sneaky plan? ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |
