not the subatomic particle, but the cars.

One of these
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/1b/Proton_Saga_Iswara_%28saloon%29_%28front%29%2C_Serdang.jpg/800px-Proton_Saga_Iswara_%28saloon%29_%28front%29%2C_Serdang.jpg

Has popped up in a local dealer, 93, FSH, 2 owners from new etc for a few hundred quid. I'm thinking convenient for cold winter when I can't be arsed with the bike. It's only the fact that it looks like a genuine car that has got me interested, I realise in current climate there is plenty about for this kind of money.

Anyone got any knowledge of Protons?

Isn't the engine Mitsibushi based ?

If it is be careful of the 1.3's and 1.5's they are very highly strung and go pop very easy I have had 2 1.5 engines fail in my Mitsubishi Colt (same engine as a Hyundai and Proton models) and that was with commuting 15 miles 3 days a week and I drove it like a granny to save on petrol one only had 65,000 miles on it when I fitted it.

Apart from that if its just for winter use, buy it man cant go far wrong doubt any thing will go major wrong with it over the few months just watch out for the plastic bits inside falling off as my mate owned a some what new hatch back one can't remember which model and that would loose trim every where Laughing

My neighbour had the same model and swore by it, did something silly like 180,000 before he replaced it with a newer proton just because he wanted to, still ran fine. I don't know much about them but I'm sure he said his one had a Honda engine in (though it might have been Mitsubishi like McGee says), they probably had a deal much like Rover with some of their cars.

Same as phoenix here, my last neighbour had his(same model) for silly years and never an issue, he just replaced for a newer ford fiesta or similar. Solid cars if treat right.

Thought you had a civic?

Basic Korean car, like a hyundai or KIA. Should be infinitely reliable, so fine for winter. Only danger will be falling asleep from the boredom of driving it.

Predominantly run on old mitsubishi engines that should go round the clock with ease but the bodywork etc will fall apart at that age, nothing complicated on them though so your average DIYer should be able to patch up anything on them.

Are you intending on buying it just for this winter, or keeping it for a few years and using it whenever the weather is awful?

If it's the latter and you fancy something a bit newer than the one you posted, you could always try one of the subsequent Proton Personas, which also used Mitsubishi bits. There's one on ebay here at only a few hundred quid, at this price they're a little cosmetically battered but they're usually driven by old biddies so should be lowish mileage and definitely not ragged (especially an auto, like the one in the link).

One of these ones, basically:

As for other marques, older Mitsubishis, Honda Civics and old Toyotas often go for a couple of hundred quid. This Corolla is going for just under £400, and it's the sort of thing that'll work for a depressingly long time.

Taxi drivers seem to love them, so that must say something about their reliability etc.

I bet they're not hugely interesting to drive though.

That Civic, was awesome, and has now been duly passed on to little bro, who is doing his best to break it, in accordance with family tradition.

I acquired a newer (04) civic auto, but me and Anne sometimes like to drive in different directions, so another car would be useful. My van isnt going to be passing its MOT anytime soon, if at all. But it nicely lowers the tone of the place to the disgust of the neighbours, so for that reason alone it will remain as long as possible Mr. Green

Thanks for the replies Thumbs Up I will give it some further consideration.

At first I thought "no don't do it they're pap!" but after a bit of consideration you do still see them doing the rounds and in more numbers than what used to be more popular stuff (like cavaliers etc).

Must be at least slightly reliable or they'd all be long gone by now! Probably daft cheap to fix too. I'm learning the hard way that a cheap initial purchase isn't always cheap motoring though! Rolling Eyes

New steering rack (which I have), couple of lights, maybe a new rear bumper (not essential).

The rest is just welding, cutting holes, more welding, banging back into shape, and tidying up corrosion. I just find it tedious, and without a garage to work in, I find it very hard to get motivated to sit out in the cold/wind/rain getting covered in hot metal filings. It'll get done eventually but just isnt happening quickly.
