Hi, thinking about taking the test for restricted licence and thinking about buying zx6 or gsxr600 and get it restricted to 33bhp. Does anyone here have any experience with it, any drawbacks, how much it cost to get bike restricted, any info you give me will help, thanks guys

my mate has just brought a 08 zx6r, cost him £120 to get it restricted, and it seems to cope well, and its still fast enough for a beginner.

cheers

Buy a new bike but don't restrict it... Pay the £120 to get the certificate and just remove the restriction when you feel comfortable with the power.

That's similar to what I did anyway.

Fair enough if you don't get caught. But if you do, you are riding without a license.

I had a restricted license and waited the 2 years, didn't really have a problem with it. Saying that I had a restricted ER5 , not a GSXr.

all seems a bit of a waste getting a nearly new sports 600, getting raped for insurance and still only having 33bhp. However ultimately the choice is yours and yours alone - no one can tell you if its worth it or not as its personal opinion.

If you want a sports 6 restricted you might be better off getting an old one which will save you money and also heart ache if you drop your shiny new R6.

I've been looking around a lot of sites to help make the decision to take my restricted or das. I've settled on restricted. BCF, to me anyway, seems to be on the side of das or restricted then removing restrictions after a couple of months. I just thought i'd put forth a counter point to what appears to me to be a prevailing majority (i say majority, it might just be that lukevfr makes 50% of the posts on bcf Laughing )

2 years seems to me to be a perfect amount of time to get really used to riding before approaching road legal racing machines. You'll probably be a better rider for it to, i certainly feel a better driver in my smaller car - i can keep up with the local porsche and impreza drivers round the country lanes in my little 1.6 pug gti - it's great fun watching them put more and more into it only to see me still in their mirrors on the way out of every corner. I intend to get to the same level of skill on a 250 before moving up.

Pointless. Get a bike that's naturally 33bhp.

Otherwise you're paying R6 running costs for a quarter of its performance.

You can get a proper sportsbike once your restriction is up, or once you're bored of the restriction after a year. Are you really going to keep a bike for more than 2 years anyway?

Some good info there but its a US site so doesn't take into consideration the experience you gain in the two years that it will be restricted. Again if it has to be a sportsbike i would say something like a 2000 or earlier ZX6 may be ok from what people said in my post.

Do direct access. If your old enough, beleive me if you have a restricted bike, or a natural 33bhp bike you will soon get bored, and im talking after a month.
The das is only around £25 more expensive and gives you the ability to go up the bike grades everytime you get bored.
And dont believe the myth, that restricted test is any easier, its just as strict as das only on a smaller bike that is probably harder to do manouvres on anyway.

Aye, you're right. I was just agreeing that the 2 years is a good idea be it a 250 or a restricted 600. They're talking fully fledged 600s, and yes american site so they can just walk out at 16 (depending on state) and get on a busa. I'm thinking after i pass i'll get a 250, then after 2 years a monster 695.

I just think all the talk of getting bored with restricted is silly really, if you're bored with 0-60 ~7s and 110mph (quoted times for a ninja and hyosung 250r) then you're either about to die or not good enough to get the most out of your machine. Having learnt to drive a car to a standard I believe is 'quite good' I've realised that the usual failing of man/machine is the fleshy bit and when you're talking a machine as powerful as a 600 or a thou the fleshy bit is seriously outgunned. So I'll try master a 250 rather than let a machine make up for my failings and hopefully at the end of it all i'll be a better rider. But of course, each to their own...

I got bored on a restrcted CBF500 after 6 months, then got a ZX6R 2001 and got that restricted, wanted beter handling so got a 2006 ZX6 restricted and i never got bored once

Took it on several track days and noone noticed the difference despite the bike 25Kw sticker on the frame!

Plus it saves you money in the long run as you won't want/need to buy a new bike when the restriction period is over

Rode 2 years with documents present but the washers were blatantly removed in my case! I had the chance of riding my old-skool ZX6R restricted and boy did it feel castrated. On an older sports 6, chances are, it'll have a broader spread of torque through the rev range, i.e. from 6k revs, there's plenty of torque to make progress with. On a modern 6, the torque band has been shifted to the higher revs, and depending on how your bike is restricted, there's no way you'll be able to get as much torque as you need. You're better off on an RS125! Wink . In short, I know that you're young and I've been there before, get a 600, be sensible on it, don't take the piss and think that you're billy big balls, because chances are, when you start to become cocky, you'll have a costly spill... and then THAT's when the police start asking questions, especially so if somebody else is involved. Ride sensible, "bend the law" and make sure your right wrist isn't as eager as your cum face! The right hand DOES not operate an on-off switch.

Having said that, i served 1.5 years of my 2 year apprenticeship on a ZXR250 (40ish rw bhp) and that showed a few of the big boys up on their 600's. Using a smaller bike properly will make you a better rider when you move up onto the bigger bikes. I personally think the guys i've ridden with - i.e. bunch of 21 year olds who have been racing on circuits or off road since 14/15 or have rode legally since 16 tend to be better than the DAS graduates, so if that's any consolation, you'll have youth on your side (with the associated vulnerability & inexperience).

Look, i bought yzfr125, first bike, i sat on it, wow, is so big, than after 3 days i was compeltly used to it " well nearly" and i alrady missed some power on it. I think you can start on sport600cc just to be more carefull with your wrist and dont try to show off. Im one of people that will get boored very qucikly (games, cars, drugs, girls, clubs, traveling, camping, etc etc, i always want something new try different things take a chalange do as much as possible, we live just ones so i dont want to waste any time on something i wount be happy about,,
