times come to do alot of driving on it, need to go to various unis around england for open days of upto 150 miles away, ive never done a big journey on a 2-stroke furthest ive done is 80 miles through london at mostly low rpm , motorway driving is high rpm for a long time so just wondering how reliable it will be, i dont really fancy getting stuck miles away from home, especially up north Razz

also is it possible to take out breakdown cover for a few days ?

I'd imagine it would be fine if you stop every so often to let it cool down and give it a break, just make sure you fill up on 2-smoke oil and take an extra bottle with you.

C_dug came on the SE rideout and went from brighton to Essex on the motorway with no probs, it was a 250 mind.

Just make sure it's running perfect before you leave, and take a small bundle of vital tools in case the worst does happen.

I don't see why he would have to stop and let it cool down. As long as the maintenance has been done 2 stroke will eat the miles up.

Just because it's a 2 stroke, doesn't mean It can't do large journeys.

True, just from when i had mine it would get pretty hot after a while. Few mates have broken down from overheating, then again they don't top up their oil which is probably what causes it.

As chives said, should be fine though. Still a good idea to take a spare bottle and little tool kit just for good measure.

Thumbs Up

Hallam or the proper Uni (which I'm at)?
I assume you have done your test so you can use motorways?

Hi

When I first moved to Nottingham area from down south I went back most weekend. That was 150 miles each way, plus miles while away on a derestricted MBX125. Generally cruising on the dual carraigeway bits at an indicated 80.

A healthy 125 2 stroke will be fine.

All the best

Keith

As others have suggested your 2smoker should be fine, just avoid sitting on the redline for miles on end. Thumbs Up

My NSR125 happily did trips to the Welsh coast and back in the early spring and that's about a 250 mile round trip, plus riding while I was there. I used to go every year - after the first trip I realised that the bike would happily do it on a single fill up of 2-stroke oil so don't worry too much about that. Just take it steady and you'll be fine Thumbs Up

It'll be fine as long as you don't hold it on the redline for prolonged periods.

Your bike isn't seriously downgeared is it? As that could cause problems.

My advise is to take the following:

Check everything before you leave (as you'd do on any bike)
Full Tank of 2t Oil
Spare Plug
Basic Tools
Sandwiches
Drink
Fruit/Biscuits

Ta,
Jack

RAC cover is a worthwile investment, think mine was £70 for the year and that includes recovery for me and my vehicle from any location in the uk (they'd take me and my bike all the way home from south wales if i broke down there! Or so they say.)

Last week I did what turned out to be a 120 mile round trip (not planned to be as far) in the Loir region of France, two up on a YB100.

Held the throttle wide open all the way and it never missed a beat.

I did however have a bloody sore arse by the time I got back!

No, mine's a blue Fazer (new style). I normally park in the bike racks at the side of the Information Commons, if you know where that is. There is usually a ZRX-12, an RSV Mille and a girl on a CBR125 parked in the same place.

i did Cov to ingoldmells (113 miles) , then ingoldmells to eastbourne on an old GT185 (217 miles according to the AA routeplanner), two up with camping gear and tools, got lost/sidetracked a couple of times so the mileage will have been higher ...

stayed there at my sisters for a couple of days then made my way back to Coventry, another 172 miles

each section of the journey was a one day affair taken at a sensible pace (minimal thrashing) so all in roughly 500 miles fully laden (that's without the local thrashing about when there), that was all done on a bike that was about 8 years old at the time, it didn't miss a beat Mr. Green

would i do it again, not a fookin chance Mr. Green it was hard work on that little bike

I did many a blast to portsmouth and back on my RXS100 best bet isn't to go on the motorways and find a route through the lanes it's easier on the bike and more fun. I held that rxs at the red line for miles many a time.

My mate used to travel 36 miles one way to get to work, he used to do it on an MT50 but it was taking him well over an hour to get to work. He then went out and bought a Casal (GT, SS, Sport or something) 50 and cut his travel time by half. I clocked him at almost 70mph on the flat, probably a real 60mph, not bad for a standard out of the box unrestricted 50.
