PostPosted: 15:46 - 28 Jan 2008    Post subject: The great Power Tool Drag Racing thread.... Reply with quote

I took part in the power tool drag races held at Haynes last year, and for this year I / we want to enter the big boys category "Ridden / Driven Solo" and ride past them all on my back wheel with my middle finger high in the air.....

Well, I've got an old electric scootaiii (that's how you say it innit?) and I want to power it from a 12" 2t 4hp disc cutter. The scoot is toothed belt-driven, and I'm pretty sure I could mount the pinion sprocket on the disc cutter, but I reckon a disc cutter has a clutch the size of a hen's toenail. So I'm thinking I might have to make an intermediate shaft (maybe with a bit of chain reduction built in too) that incorporates a bigger clutch that can take my weight. Are there any external housings that I could use? I'm not clued up on scoots, but I know the type of clutch from an old Suffolk Punch lawnmower would probably do the job. For a while!

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly received! Karma

Ok, seems I might be breaking fresh ground here then. Maybe a couple of pics would help?

You are going to strap something made for cutting through hard things, near your ankles, so you can race a glorified metal skateboard? insane!

Incorrect. I have been asked by my employer to participate in the event. I'm just doing what the boss tells me to!

And yes Jackyboy, I do feel a little devoid of the cleverjuice when I think of it. Thing is last year, we won a class with a belt sander and a metre of threaded rod. We came about 7th (I think) with our dragster, which was based on a 2kW 9" angle grinder, but the robot wars guys beat us. So I know they'll perform well this year too. Hence, I'm taking on the big guns, for instance, Silverline tools, who host the event actually made a V-12 kart. With chainsaws. So that's 12 chainsaws just behind your head. Shocked

ok, latest news from power tool central is that we now have a power source, a Makita 12" disc cutter, as below:

64cc, 3.3kW (dunno what that is in ponies but I would guess it's about 3?)

I've ordered a sprocket for the 5mm toothed belt drive for the scoot, and I'll take it and the final drive from the cutter to the local machine shop to graft on. That will be an 'intermediate' shaft and I've decided to just stick with the stock centrifugal clutch on the tool....

More pics will indeed follow when the two items are one. Twisted Evil

Bah. My boss asked me to make a word document on the defects I raised last week.
Any jobs going at your place? Razz

Oh and you should have gone for an engine from one of those hold diggery things - the ones that need two people to hold them and can have 125cc 2stroke engines Smile.

If the clutch is a problem - I'd rip one off a scooter or minimoto. The scooter ones are usually integrated into the rear wheel section, which also houses some gearing stuff.

Update - it's now done. 16 miles per hour is a little disappointing, but there aren't any options on the gearing, so it'll have to be now. The ride is very twitchy, but highly wheelie-able, since all the weight is over the back.....

I should be in with a chance to impress some people, as the event is tomorrow! Anyone in the area, come and say hello... I'll be the one in the yellow shirt.

I was gonna say those 12" cutters already have an automatic clutch.

Yeah, I know. The worry was that it'd be a really small one, but in fact it's about 2" and the shoes are pretty much most of the way across the bell, not just tiny contact patches. So I *hope* it'll last now.....!

Well I didn't do that badly. I came fourth out of nine. The top 3 all had more than one engine.... Dallas from the Gadget Show was there, as were the cameras, so I might get on telly at some point!

Next year we're doing electric power and I think I might start a blog of our actions somewhere....

And, congrats on fourth place! Smile

Next year we're gonna do it with VOLTS. I'm changing my name to Igor, and we're going to mount a generator on a kart chassis, with lots of power tools driving it......

And the scootaii will have a proper chain and the gearing sorted. I reckon there's enough power to get to at least 40 if it's sorted properly. Need to do some sums now!

Well, I had set the idle a little high to make the getaway a little quicker, it's true.... Laughing
Tell thee what though, if it was centred on the chassis, it'd be a doddle to wheelie. As it is, it comes up quick and falls over to the right in less time than you can shut the throttle!
