I just needed to rant

I did a gig on monday night, pcked out room above a pub, I know the promoter well and he called me up the day before because he had a drop out and needed someone to do a 10 minute spot.

Get to the gig, sit down about 2 rows from the front, the promoter/compere comes on, starts off with some material then has some banter with me and my 2 friends that had come down to watch, it got the night warmed up nicely. The opener comes on, he's a paid opener, been going for quite a while, he starts his set, I'm watching, as you do.

Suddenly he looks at me, then launches an attack on me saying "Shaun, you got a 10 middle spot and think you've made it big, wanna keep yourself in check mate". My 2 friends assume I know him and it's some sort of in joke. I'm sat there a bit confused, he knew I was on tonight, yet decided to launch an unprovoked attack on me!

During the break I went outside and wondered whether I was over reacting and got very tempted to retaliate with my stage time but decided against it, essentially I could only come out looking like a cock if I did and I'd got it wrong.

After the gig (which went really well) I was chatting to my friends and they were shocked to find out I'd never met the opener before but I just shrugged it off. Then today I get an email from the promoter thanking me for going down but saying he's had a few emails saying the act in question had been out of line in what he said to me and asking me what was going on because he missed it.

So now I'm a bit pissed, what the fuck did he attack me for, he's never met me or seen me before yet he felt the need to put me down before I'd been on which could've really fucked me up when it come to me going on. I just can't figure out why he'd do it, all he has achieved is a getting a few people who thought he was so out of line they should let the promoter know and now having the promoter who paid him hearing from his audience they were unimpressed with the attitude of him.

Now I knew there was bitchyness on the 'circuit' a long time ago and I've made an effort to avoid but it's hard not to be pissed off when another act randomly decides to be a dick head to you when he knows damn well you've got to go on after him.

I'm in 2 minds as to whether to let it slide, ignore it and hope I don't come across such cuntish tricks in the future or whether to contact him and ask him what the hell it was all about.

To be fair, it's all part of the game. Swings and roundabouts, you sometimes consider this to be a big show, and put people down you have never met before.

What sort of a comedian was he? If he was one of those funny cunts, (and I actually mean a cunt who is funny) then it's him meh. If he was fine and generally a bit of a safe player, then slap him for it.

Spitting your dummy out a bit though, surely you do the same thing to loads of people all the time with your comedy, but someone does it to you and you can't deal with it?

just to clarify, by him being an opener he was a paid act (only £35 mind), he's hardly further up the chain then me, it strikes me as odd that someone who is further up the chain than me would feel the need to launch an unprovoked attack on an open spot who is there at short notice to polish up his set.

If it had been another open spot who had done it I could understand it, it's not easy on the open spot circuit to get noticed and move up a level, something I'm slowly managing. All he has done is wind up a promoter who supplys him with work.

There's no logic to it at all, it's not so much the attack that wound me up, just the fact he knew I was on later, if I'd retaliated badly I could've been on the wrong foot with the audience from the off.

Oh and in the year I've been doing this I've only ever put down 2 people, both who heckled me thus bringing it on themselves, if you put down people for no reason you look like a dick.

I'm glad I've come out of it on top, it's nice that the audience cared enough to go out of their way to give their opinion of him to the promoter.

On the plus side I had an ace gig that gave me my full motivation back to pursue it properly instead of in a half arsed manner.

But if you sit back and think up some really biting remarks about HIM, keep an eye on his career, and whether he goes up or goes down in popularity, you can stick it to him later on.

Thus, if his star starts to wane and yours is going up, you get to have a dig from the position of "rising young comedian having amusing pop at lesser type" - your stock is going up, and you can afford to banter about him.

If he gets more famous than you, you get to have a dig at him - and the sheer controversy of you popping at someone "more famous" may well bring your star up out of notoriety alone.

My band was heckled at our last gig by some knob-jockey at the bar, gesticulating and shouting abuse at us. I did the only thing I could. I blew kisses at him and winked. Maybe his mates thought he had pulled the hairy bass player!


I think you did the right thing not retaliating at the time. It gives you the moral high ground as far as the promoter is concerned, so your chances of working for him again shouldn't be affected

Perhaps it isnt the career for you if you're sensitive to this kind of stuff, I can only imagine it'll get worse....

Not really harold because that isn't how a gig should be, comics don't use each other as punching bags, it's not cricket. If it was an ok thing to do then the promoter wouldn't be emailing me asking what went on. If I'd got in to an insult match with the guy all it would've done is make one of us look stupid to the audience and leave a nasty atmos in the gig.

There's only one gig on the circuit where comics heckle the shit out of each other and it's only attended by comics as a fuck about, a lot of comics won't even go to watch because of its rep, I've done it, it was a laugh.
