97 GSX 600F.

Anyone hear own one or had one? any comments or opinions on this?

finished work late last night only to go down to the carpark and find a pool of coolant under my zxr 750, great I thought.

Managed to get it home without it over heating mainly thanks to the ultra low temps and carefully balancing the right speed for windchill with the right revs/speed of not getting too hot last night otherwise I don't think it would of been possible,

Anyway hole in the radiator I found today and loading it back up with water/coolant then running for 15 mins on idle the leak became apparent with the pressure up.

It's an easy fix, second hand radiators everywhere that's not an issue but it made me think I'm screwed for work if something serious happens so looking at a 97 GSXF online near me today really cheap with long MOT on it. Milage unknown at this stage.

Could be good for a backup bike in case the ZXR goes down again in the future.

Just looking for advice.

Kind regards

I had the earlier shape GSX750f. Not much changed besides the fairings in 97, and a slightly lower power output on the newer models. Less low end torque on the 600 obviously but not a huge difference between the 600 and 750 by all accounts.

It was a very comfy bike. Quite heavy, but on the move it was fine. Very smooth ride, very stable, but quite softly sprung so more sports tourer than sports. Engine was fairly pokey above 7k, not so much under that. Really nice gearbox. Poor brakes, but that could have just been lack of maintainance on my old example.

Good weather protection but liable to get blown about in crosswinds - I also experienced a lot of buffecting because of the more upright riding position. Consider it a poor mans VFR.

Wil thanks for the great info there.

At this stage for a backup bike I'm not fussed about sports tourer status etc in fact it may be slightly more economical on the consumables and fuel that my ZXR which is a plus for commuting.

I got miserly fuel economy from my 750, but it had a full G Force exhaust, K&N and I believe a dynojet fitted. I managed 30mpg while cruising on the motorway, and around 90 miles to reserve. I'm sure a stock GSX600f would be far better than this, though!

i like mine, styling is a bit 90s and doesn't cut with the supersports lads, but its a capable bike.

i whooped many a faster bike on my track day, its how you ride it and all that.

i am now looking to replace it though, as i want something newer and more powerful.

I have a 1995 750 and the fuel economy is decent (a good 150 miles to reserve) - I'm not too gentle with it either. Mines standard, and I believe K&Ns in particular don't work well on these bikes.
Overall it makes a good reliable backup - 600 probably a bit slow as it's quite heavy. The big fairing seems (on mine at least) to keep the traditional suzuki corrosion at bay, apart from the downpipes.
Also no need to worry about coolant leaks - it's air/oil cooled!

I had a 98 and put about 50,000 miles on it over 3 years. Big lump of a thing, solid if not particularly exiting. Quite comfortable, handled 2-up rides with no fuss, topped out at about 130 1-up but took a while to get there. I could get between 100 to 140 from a tankful depending on how (and where) I rode.

There are better bikes out there for the job, but as a backup commuter it should do fine, as well as taking it out for a bit of a hoon around occasionally.

Ignore anything colin1 says about them though - he's a close personal friend of Jack Shit.
