A new GPS system from Honda to try and reduce accidents

Shown off at the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium event in Germany, it’s a neat system that gives bikers advance warning of other vehicles up ahead. Honda says it’s particularly helpful at intersections, as it can predict which cars are on a “collision course”.

*Sounds* good, but we'll have to wait and see if it performs any good.

Or alternatively, you could just pay attention to what you are doing and what is going on around you. Neutral

No, you need somebody to snap your license and then keyboard in half.

ahem. Capitals?

And to be honest, you need to pay more attention to the road around you.

Everyone loses concentration sometimes.

This system is a great idea, I'm unsure as to whether the take-up will be great as it relies on every vehicle broadcasting it's position. This obviously makes the system useless until the majority of vehicles have the system installed and creates a chicken and egg situation. Also there's the privacy issues... we know that as soon as every vehicle broadcasts it's position the cops / government will want to log that data and use it against us in every conceivable manner.

However, the next step is auto-reaction to danger (like the modern mercs), then auto-drive on motorways finally there'll be no user interaction at all.

IMO it might tempt some riders to concentrate even less on their surroundings, expecting the device to do the work for them.

At the moment, I'm not convinced it will work particularly well.

I agree. The good thing about a bike is you pretty much have to concentrate. you can't text whilst riding, etc.

I think technology can help, but it becomes a problem when it replaces (rather than aids) good driving. we all know car drivers who have lots of gadgetry in their cars, and a very obvious lack of road sense.

If you "need" gadgets like that of hondas, you shouldn't be on the road. If it will "help you" you need to do some serious work on your obs.

You're missing the point. Obviously as a perfect rider you wouldn't need one but what about if others had them so they couldn't pull out in front of you or ride into the back of you at the lights.

Here is my concern

There are already many, many vehicles on the road, and as such they won't all have the system onboard

People being people are lazy and will stop using their eyes if they have a system to do it for them, which means they will miss more untagged vehicles.

Did I make sense?

If someone needs a device to stop them riding into someone at traffic lights, I don't think they should be on a bike in the first place.

Well, i meant drive but either way rear ending accidents happen all the time and people like that are on the road. I know 88% of people are better than average drivers/riders (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Wobegon_effect), but surely for those who are below average it'd make things safer for everyone.

Don't take this as a ringing endorsement on my part though, i still see the introduction of the system as a major stumbling block. Until a majority has it it's not a lot of use. I also see things like the darpa challenge and the merc systems that don't rely on inter-vehicle communication as probably being a superior solution before every vehicle has a system like this installed so it may be a bit of a deadend technology wise.

Yes, actually there were a few people shouting that opinion. I'm not entirely sure they were wrong.

And with ABS brakes. And with seatbelts in cars. And with lorry speed limiters.

All the best
