Hi all i have been wandering around this great forum for a short while and it already has helped me with a few problems i have with my bike, but i have one quick question that i hope you can help me with Smile

ive only been riding bikes for a few weeks now and my first bike a honda cg 125 1996 seams to be running very slow. on a recent trip to the next town the best i could get out of her was 40-45mph! is this normal? im sure it should get up to at least 55-60. this was an open road with no other cars and was hoping to see what the bike could do and i wasnt to impressed Sad dont get me wrong i love my bike i just wish it would go a bit faster. any advice u could give would be appreciated thank you

Was that in 5th gear.
If so you needed to be in 4th gear.
I assume you had strong head wind and or up hill.
And of course if your heavy that would make it worse.
Next time you have the same problem try turning the bike around and travel in the other direction to see what happens.
Sometimes you may not realise how strong the wind really is or how up hill it really is.

If non of the above work there must be a fault with the bike.

Have you found the Honda CG125 website yet?

thanks for the replys,

never really thought about things like weight. i weighed myself this morning and im about 17 stone (haven't weighed myself since i got married!! that was a shock!) Smile

as for the wether it was a bit windy and the road was an seldom used A road with many twists and turns and ups and downs.

all these things must be making a difference. i always assumed that if a bike was supposed to do 60mph then thats what it would do regardless of other factors like wether/weight. but at least i know that the bike is fine which is good. and i will try going up and down the same stretch of road to see if wind direction makes any difference
thanks for advice and the website link too guys Smile

when i reach 45 mph it seams to have no power. its hard to explain as i know very little about bikes but it sounds like its struggling to keep the speed and wants to slow down or go up a gear even when its in top gear, lots of juddering. the bike acelerates very well and is a very nippy and easy to control bike for around the town even at slow speeds and pulls away quick at the lights, its just humiliating having cars overtake me on long roads when im trundling along at 40.

I'm not light and i've got an indicated 65 out of one. They should be fairly quick to 55 then a bit slow after that.

Your checklist:

Check spark plug colour. If in doubt post a picture.
Fiddle with air filter, jets and mixture.
Compression test cylinder. As a high revving single it does alot of workand can easily wear out rings. Rebore and rings is very cheap and easy.

Before ALL of the above, check your choke isn't on.

Also, If it's the first time you've ridden it as such, don't fall into the misconception that you can't screw the tits off it in every gear. I found changing gear too early slows it down a lot.
You WILL find that the difference between the top 2 gears is enormous, you'll end up going too fast for one, but not fast enough for the other and losing speed, (especially on an uphill slope.) So expect to be up and down between these two gears a lot.

You'll soon get the hang of it, it all comes with knowing your bike Thumbs Up

Well i managed to get 65 out of the bike yesterday Mr. Green

i checked all the thing that could be wrong and it turns out i was just changing gear to early Razz i ranted it in each gear and only changed to 5th at the last possible second. i can now get 50-60 out of it no problem. thank for all your advice people, i guess i just needed more practice and confidence riding the bike (which can only come with time) thanks again for all the tips im sure they will come in handy if anything does ever go wrong in the future Smile
