Hi guys,

Just got a quick question. I'm gonna change my oil in a few days in preparation for the winter (so i've just in some cheap hein gericke semi synth stuff). I usually change the oil every 6 months/6000 miles or so, but it's the first time I've personally been bothered to do it, as opposed to getting a mate to do it.

Do bike engines require engine flush prior to filling it with new oil, i.e. you shove in x amount of engine flush in with the old oil and drain that before putting in the new one, or would that kinda bugger up the clutch plates?

Nevertheless, hopefully THIS time around, I won't strip the threads of the sump bolt nor will the bike end up with a dicky oil pressure switch like the previous times i've attempted it!

Are you planning on just letting it stand over winter or are you using it? Would you do another oil change next year? Just wondering if the HG stuff is just going to be wasted?

anyway, don't use oil flush.

Its basically a detergent, not dissimilar to diesel. It can cause more problems than you want to know about on older engines. At best it serves no purpose at all, at worst it can cause problems with seals and may release embedded crap that may cause other problems.

as said.. forget the flushing stuff. your old oil will be carrying the crap around along with the filter.
something that has had regular services should never need that shite Thumbs Up

warm the bike up before draining.... but you knew that Thumbs Up

I dimly recall reading a test on various oils in which motoul oil came out best by a fair margin for preventing corrosion of engine internals. So it would probably be one of the best ones to leave in an engine that is going to be sitting about.

I guess engine flush is snake oil then.

Nah, i'll be using the bike throught winter. At the end of the day, any engine oil does the same job as the other so I'm not too fussed. I won't be ragging the bike much throughout winter, but I won't be surprised if i clock 3000 miles during now and march... right about the same time as my next oil change.

If all goes to plan, the i'll be doing mallory next saturday so I'd rather run fresh oil rather than shagged oil.

Used HG stuff before and had no problems with it... although semi-synth, 4 litres for 14 quid does sound a bit suspicous.

I found the HG fully synthetic stuff made my engine a lot noisier. No issues with the other sorts.

I was under the impression it was better to change the oil after a trackday rather than before.

Surely you would want the good oil in there for while you are wazzing (technical term) round the track rather than have the nice fresh oil sitting in it when you get home and change it. it doesnt have magical properties so wont heal any damage afterwards!

For my car i buy a litre more oil than i need (or use new cheap stuff) and pour that into the filler once i've drained the old oil.

First 250mls pushes out the old stuff, the next 2 lots gets clearer, then the final 250mls is clear.

Or, if you're that bothered, do a change with cheapish oil and ride for 100 miles and drop it again.

I'm currently using the HG 10W-40 semi-synthetic in my bike, although it is JASO MA rated it is only API SF/SG rated. If you're going to use it long term I would check your handbook/owners manual.

I've used the Castrol and the Motul equivalents and found that they seemed to degrade quite quickly and the engine got noisy after 2000 miles. I'm not saying that's a scientific assessment, it's just my personal opinion/experience. Given the cost and the fact that the HG oil is suitable for my engine I decided to use it changing it monthly, that's approx every 2000 miles.

I've been using it for about a year and apart from the major service every 10-12 months when the mechanic overfills it with Motul it's now my oil of choice. Thumbs Up
