The most intelligent 14-year-old in 2008 is now only on a par with the brightest 12-year-old in 1976, according to the findings.

Being a devils advocate, one could say that surely this is the fault of the older generation for not providing the education to the up and coming kids Razz .

But average achievement was found to be similar in teenagers from both generations.

So not that much diffrent.

Looking back i would say its got far more to do with the amount of time your average child spends inside watching TV or playing on computer/games machine.
Where as your child of 76 would have been outside having far more fun. Thumbs Up

I think kids are intelligent in different ways now.

You kid of '76 will be good at solving logical solutions to something physical, i.e how to tie a knot, the best way to climb up a tree etc. They will be physically fitter and probably leading a healthier lifestyle with no additives, relatively little junk food and probably would perform better in school.

You kid of '08 will be better at tasks related to quick reactions, their hand eye co-ordination will be amazing, mobile phones, computer games have ensured this. Your kid of 2008 theoretically have a knowledge of the wider world, thanks to the internet. They will have sex education at five, however will still be littering the UK with scum for as long as the government benefits people for copulating.

This is of course all hypothetical. I was born in '88 so was probably the last of the generation whose childhood revolved around playing outside playing football in the streets, climbing trees, catching newts from the local stream, joining a cub/scout group, making bonfires in the woods and riding bicycles. However my childhood from 12 years old onwards probably fitted the bill of your typical child today.

Hi

Possibly intelligent in different ways, and IQ tests mainly test peoples ability to do an IQ test. Different culteral experiences will affect peoples score.

Not sure that peoples reactions now would be quicker. Quite possibly generally slower.

All the best

I bet the average 14-year-old in 2008 can do a lot more with computer than the average 30 year old could do in 1976. Proof a 14 of today is smarter than a 30 year old of 1976.

Proof the 30yr old and his colleagues did a good job inventing personal computers!

What's perhaps even more telling is the research that seems to pop up every year detailing the further decline in kids general knowledge and grasp of British history.

Good point. That's the criteria for getting First in Comp Sci these days, isn't it?

There is little need for intelligence these days. Most jobs are designed to be zero skill so that anyone can do them.

Getting on in life is more about social dominance ie being an obnoxious prick. Kids these days are getting much better at that sort of thing as its what you need to get on.

There may be a few jobs where intelligence is an advantage, but mostly its a hinderance.

Hmmm, human history goes back about 5500 years. So the extra 32 years of history from 1976 to 2008 0.58% more history. And that knocks 2 years off their intelligence?

All the best

Shame those who went to school in 76 and prior to that have fucked everything up for the kids of today. They merely enter in to the world. The advertising, education and general make up of society are what begin shaping them.

Well when i was in school all you ever got taught in history was the tudors, the victorians and a little bit about the romans. Skimmed the surface of the last decade, barely touched anything on both the world wars. Ridiculous, probably one of the biggest if not THE biggest event in the last couple of hundred years wasn't even covered.

I don't think teenagers are less intelligent now days, but they don't have much common sense. A lot of my mates are pretty clever, can do accountancy/computing etc but they have no common sense what so ever. It actually amazes me as non of them watch the news or know whats going on in the world, also people i meet at partys seem suprised that motorbikes have manual gears Shocked .

The main problem now is you have coursework + exams that all interlink somehow and the students don't understand how it works. So you end up thinking "Fuck it i'll go on the internet" rather than doing the work itself, that's what i'm like anyway.
