OK, so this probably won't help you on the bike (though your lack of front number plate will), but if you take your car this appears to be a novel way of avoiding prosecution and winding up the local rozzers at the same time.

German traffic cops angered by British driver who mocks traffic cams with a Muppet

https://www.boingboing.net/muppet-at-the-wheel.jpg

Quote:
Someone in Germany is driving an automobile built for UK roads and has installed a Muppet in the passenger seat. The speed cameras in Germany are made to take photos of drivers who sit in the left side of the vehicle, so drivers of UK-style cars driver can't be easily identified.

A German police source said: “The number plate is not enough. We need clear evidence of who is driving the vehicle too.
“But because this is a British vehicle we can never get a decent picture. The driver has obviously worked this out because he has placed a large puppet in the passenger seat.

“This may be an example of the famous British sense of humour but it is still dangerous driving. The driver has been caught on camera on several occasions and the puppet is on the passenger seat every time. We suspect he positions the toy deliberately before accelerating past the camera.”

Jeremy Clarkson did this in Japan with the Nissan GT-R, he used a cardboard cut out of Bill Oddie on a stick and held it in front of his face.. priceless!

Good friend of mine was posted in Germany for a couple of years. He was caught speeding - over 100mph on the autobahn. Think the limit is around 90mph. Was given an on the spot fine of 30euro. Laughing

He said it was pretty much worth speeding over there, the 'punishment' was negligible.

None of this if you do not grass up who was driving you will be punished bollocks over there then.

Nice.

I thought the autobahns were famous because of their lack of speed limit?

I may be wrong though.

I passed by cameras on german Autobahn at speeds 130mph+ in 80mph areas many times. Before TomTom warned me about cameras they were already behind me. Never had any Muppet with me though. Never got any ticket or fine.. I don't think it was possible to get one unless police stop me.. Embarassed

That was a long time ago - I've heard of Truckers getting speeding ticket there in the seventies.

There are still some sections which are unregulated though

Lived in BoxHead land for 6 years in the late 80s early 90s and the Bahn had both restricted and unrestricted sections.

This may have been a myth but towards the end of my time there it was said that there was a virtual 200KPH limit as following a crash between a Porsche and an Osties Trabant the insurance companies said they wouldn't pay out over 200KPH. This meant that Plod knew people over 200KPH were effectively driving without insurance and so would pull people who did over that. Some of us checked with our UK insurance companies (year long green cards) and their answer was no problem, if the law said no limit then fill our boots.

Got to admit going past a plod car at an indicated 147MPH in an Astra is fun!!!!

There are only a few stretches that are still unlimited.

And saying that what's the fun in that? The mountain on the Isle of Man is nearer and a lot more fun. Thumbs Up

Part of the code Napoleon.

The idea is you cannpot ask someone to incriminate themselves you have to have actual evidence. Was introduced so that people couldn't be tortured to incriminate themselves.

One of the few things I would like to see adopted in this country as it has been adopted over most of the rest of Europe.

Agreed, if I remember correctly it is a human right not to incriminate yourself, however our glorious leaders opted out of that clause or something similar.

It was only a couple of years ago that we had the right to silence.

Tripped a few cameras over the summer in France. Some of them ARE rear facing (spotted them on the Autoroutes near Nice) so watch out for them. The one thing that I noticed was the placement of them in tunnels - the lighting is dim so you get adjusted to the darkness and then FLASH, right into your eyes and you're totally blinded for 5-10 seconds. Nice design that Thumbs Up I guess it serves me right for speeding, but they could quite easily cause an accident.

So if they need clear evidence of the driver, does that mean bikers with tinted lids are effectively impossible to prosecute?

We can't be done by speed cameras abroad anyway yet, you can thank our government's crappy IT systems for that.
