Last night pulling up to a roundabout I was breaking and stopped but the engine lost revs and died. After this the bike will not start but it backfires on pretty much every kick. Tonight I have cleaned the carb about and that does not appear to be the issue. Does anyone know what the problem could be? There is a spark and the plug is wet. I topped up with Shell unleaded V Power about 12 miles before if thats any use.

Contaminated petrol? Had you run into reserve before you filled up? Perhaps had some grit/dirt/rust at the bottom of the tank?

I'd personally get a clean jerry can and empty the tank (you may need 2 actually). Then give the tank a swirl out with new clean petrol, clean the filter on the tap and any inline filter you have, and then put a little bit of petrol in, reconnect and switch it on to reserve.

You can get contaminated fuel from any brand or type of petrol.
It can be just at that one petrol station.
Or I should say one of the petrol tanks under the petrol station.

Was it raining when the fault happened?

I also assume you filled up with contaminated petrol.
How much did you put in and how much was in the petrol tank before?

Try a new plug, it could just be coincidence with the fuel.

Didn't think of that. I've actually had a bike not start after running out of petrol before - filled it back up and went through everything, turned out it was the simplest thing - the spark plug.

Im glad its sorted.
How many miles had the spark plug done?
Was the gap out by much?

If you had a 2 stroke I would have mentioned spark plug.
But I did not since its a 4 stroke.

I must admit I carry a spare spark plug with the bikes tool kit.
Its just an old habit from my 2 stroke days.

Well ive found out what the problem is. After following what Alun said the bike still wouldnt start. After that I popped off the rocker cover and the rocker itself (brand new 200 miles ago) was locked solid. At this point I pushed it down to the local bike mechanic and he says where the part was poorly made the tolerances were all wrong and thats what caused it to seize when it heated up. I wheeled it back home as i dont have the money to put it right (again) and put the old one back on and the bike fires up again but makes a right racket. Crying or Very sad Where do I lie with the place that the rocker assembley came from are they responsable for costs that the defective rocker caused such as van rental to get the bike back and the costs of repair?

Did you get the part from a Honda dealer.
Or a Honda spares shop.
If not were did you get it from?
Chinese cloned Honda CG125 part comes to mind and they are notorious.
I find it very hard to belive a genuine honda part would be at fault unless it was for a different version of the engine.

Can you adjust the valve clearances on a CG? Should help quieten it down.

It was a genuine Honda CG125W part from David Silver Spares. I also had a genuine exhaust from them which was wildly overchromed around the bolts which needed modification to fit it.

David Silver Spares seems like a good company.
I have only phoned them once before and they seemed very good.
If I was you I would contact them by phone first and see what they say.

Is there any question about if the engine is the original that came with the bike?
Check out the Honda CG125 websites Links Page (Spare Parts Section). To check the engine serial with the model version.
https://hondacg125.awardspace.com/

Because if the engine is not the original (someone changed it) it could explain whats happened since the Honda CG125 engines often change a bit from version to version.

If it turns out its the part thats wrong.
I would question if the wrong part was supplied or if its a fake.
Fakes are getting in to loads of supply chains for anything thanks to China.

If David Silver Spares are a good company (which I expect they are) they should be very concerned about whats happened and sort your problems out as well as find out what happened in the supply chain to stop it happening again.
