pa - I respect your opinion and the way you've put it above I can't disagree with you at all.

What frustrates me is that the BBC have previously had a good name for quality, and frankly I don't see these two jigging about and making prank phone calls as a quality effort. Certainly doesn't justify JW's multi million deal.

Take a look at Fawlty Towers for example. Not just because of who was in it, but it was and still is a quality production. The Office was another. It's one thing to be risky and 'edgy' by pushing the boundaries, but I cannot fathom what the decision makers were thinking of when they ok'd this for a radio show.

And don't get me started on the Moyles show. Oh you didn't mention it? Good... Laughing

What i find really funny about the whole thing is that a couple of years ago i was living over in north west london and a mate of mine goes to rock clubs/goth clubs etc and i remember him telling me at the time this girl georgie who was a cage dancer had been all over him, got his number etc, but as he had just started out with his current girl (of 4 years now) he dident do anything with her...

He picked up the metro the other day to see the very same girl in the middle of this whole issue...

His claim to fame, good enough for brand but not good enough for him...

Seems shes a bit frisky is old georgina...

You've got a male slut, Brand
A bellend, Ross
A flirty, rock chic of a famous guy, Georgie
And faulty towers pensioner

The comedians try a joke on him, it's not funny.

I really have NO idea why any one is carrying this on. It's a fuc*in waste of time.
As for Brand quitting the show i think that's weak.

Seems to me this whole thing is a pretty damning indictment of how stupid most of the people in this country are. Brand and Ross are coarse, tactless fuckwits - always. There is no story here. If you don't like them they're perfectly avoidable, you just press the power button on the life support machine/TV and they go away. Clearly the bloke from Fawlty Towers is capable of being offended on his own so there's no need to do it for him.

What is truly pathetic is that this has apparently the most important thing happening in the world for the past week or so. And it doesn't appear to be questioned at all. Nobody's complaining. I looked on the Beeb's HYS section the other day and expected to see the 'readers recommend' comments full of 'put some real news on' type comments. But they're not. There's just page after page of high and mighty arseholes insisting that they were oh-so-offended when in actual fact they would never have known or cared about the non-event had the media not waved it in their faces underneath leading headlines for days.

Then you look at the numbers: A HYS topic on the recession has 2,092 comments whereas 33,670 people felt compelled to provide their insightful views on a couple of hairy, unfunny, attention seekers who did something about 2% more offensive than normal. In other words, the British people are sixteen times more interested in a prank phone call than the fact they'll be unable to pay their own phone bills in 12 months time.

Excuse the rant, but like Hellkat I have been trying to convince myself that people aren't that stupid for such a long time, so it comes as a bit of a shock to learn that in actual fact it's a miracle that most people manage to tie their shoes in the morning.

Arrow They are both twats; while both are quite witty - they are also boorish and offensive - Woss is also exceptionally arrogant, even by my standards!

Arrow While most of those complaining did not listen to the show, they are all assumedly license fee-payers, and thus are entitled to express their opinions on how their money is being spent. Had the show been aired by a channel that wasn't publicly funded I don't think 99% of the people whining would have a leg to stand on. However, as they have indirectly and involuntarily funded this drivel, I think they have a right to complain about its content now that they have been made aware of it.

Arrow They are both twats.

Arrow As I said on my thread in Random Banter - I can't believe that the PM had the cheek to express his opinion on the matter. As little as I give a toss about Ross and Brand, I care even less for what Brown has to say about them. Get back to screwing my country up you useless nob-gobbler!

Yes. I see points 1 and 3 are essentially the same but important enough to mention twice*

...but he must keep practicing the use of spin and smoke and mirrors to deflect attention from how much the country's screwed. After all, he's entitled to a hobby, shame it's playing at Prime Minister Very Happy

On topic IMO Brand & Ross just acted like immature school kids sniggering at the latest fart joke. The real shame is that it was pre-recorded and the responsible adults at the BBC didn't cut or rework the material before broadcast.

Thumbs Up

This is another point I do not understand, everyone is calling for the public flogging of RB & JR, yet seem not to understand that this was shown to an official, who then showed it to their superiors, who gave a thumbs up all round, so evidently it is they who should be criticised and not the other two dicks.

Im hearing on the radio people calling in saying "Damn right RB is correct in resigning". Lol, do these fuckwits think it will make any difference to the guy? Even if the DID fire JR, you can bet your bottom dollar that within weeks both of them will have signed a lucrative deal with some other channel who are going to take advantage of the controversy, or endless gash printed on the covers of OK! or Heat magazine. These idoits complaining dont realise what they've done - we're going to see these arseholes faces' everywhere now for the next month or so Evil or Very Mad

I personally find Russell brand entertaining but he's a bit of a loose cannon when allowed to run wild, his previous co-host was there to keep Russell in check, he'd slow him down before he went past the line and everything would be fine.

Listening to the recordings Jonathan was egging him on, he started the whole thing by randomly shouting out that Russell had shagged his granddaughter. Russell then goes off on one about how Jonathan has messed it up and it's a disaster, he then decides he can fix it with another phone call, which Jonathan eggs him on to do and again a third time.

This never should've been broadcast, all of this hassle could've been avoided by not broadcasting it, something which the producer should've known, it's his job to stop hideously offensive stuff from going out.

Fair play to Russell for stepping down, if I was him I would do the same, I imagine he can live perfectly well without the 200k, firing Jonathan would be pointless, another channel would snap him up within a day!

In terms of people being stupid, we can now assume that not only are they to stupid to change the channel or turn their TV's off, they're so fucking stupid that they will go out of there way to be offended. Why would I eat peanuts when I know they give me the boak? Confused

It defies logic. Remember that pet hospital drivel that used to be on at dinner time? No way do I want to see a cat being neutered as I tuck into my meatballs, why the hell would I then deliberately watch it then complain about it a week later??

I don't disagree with people complaining (outside the terms set out above.) But I do disagree with entertainers (I use the term loosely) being forced out of their jobs because some stuck up prude didn't like what they went out of their way to listen to or watch.

As I said before, I pay my license fee too and while I find some things on the telly offensive (all those extreme disfigurement/disability/fat/thin/boak etc etc etc) I wouldn't jump on some band wagon and have the makers/presenters etc forced out of their jobs for it.

Thumbs Up

Wouldn't necessarily mean happy days for him though would it?

Just take a look at what happened when Parkinson went to ITV... Or when the football highlights went to ITV...

You can Thumbs Up all you like - what Woss and Brand did was deliberately harass and offend someone who had not agreed to be part of their show. It was not only rude and offensive, it was tantamount to a criminal offense!

People are quite right to be concerned that public funds are used to pay such huge amounts for 'talent' like these guys to abuse members of the public like that.

This situation goes beyond the standard 'well, we all find different things funny' line.

I think the outcome so far has been fairly appropriate for the incident, ie Brand resigning and the Radio2 head, all that's left is for that useless overpaid twat Ross to quit aswell.

Brand is well known to be slightly outrageous, though I think doing what he did to a bloke of 79 or so is overstepping the mark. Jonathan Ross is paid so much money for so little that he should be extremely careful about anything he does, if it was any ordinary job they'd both of been sacked, when you get 6million a year one big mistake like this is all it should take to get the boot.

I heard on the radio that Gordon Brown had broken off from International talks to comment on the situation, if that's true then it shows what a bunch of morons they are. I doubt it's been blown out of all proportion to cover something up, if they want to keep something quiet they just wont mention it or they will as they know there's nothing anyone can or will do anyway.

So you'd be content with someone telling you what they thought was fit for your viewing/listening pleasure? More over, you'd be happy for Daily Mail readers to choose for you?

Did you listen to the radio show, or did you (like so many others) go out of your way to feel offended by listening to it after the fact?

You really don't get it, do you?

They are publicly funded by a tax on owning a TV - as such, their actions are open to public scrutiny, including mine.

Watch what you like - just don't expect it to be blindly funded by me.

What pathetic logic - I suppose that if I don't directly witness political decisions I don't like, I can't hold an opinion? If I'm not standing next to someone when they are raped, I can't be outraged or angry?

Something happened that I think was wrong - this wasn't just a rude conversation, they DID something to this Manuel guy (who I've never heard of) that was unacceptable.

You're acting like this was a private conversation that we've all been eavesdropping on, but it was something completely different - and if you can't see that, you ain't worth the hassle of arguing with.

Here's what I posted on the matter in another forum, minus the swearing, for my poor karma:

Quote:
Right, I'm fed up to the back teeth of the stuck-up, overly politically correct public, a media that hypes everything up to ridiculous degrees, and hypocritical f**king idiot TV "personalities".

I'm sure you've all heard a bit about all the trouble surrounding phone calls to Andrew Sachs and the suspension of Jonathon Ross and Russell Brand that surrounded it.

Now, I don't condone what either of them did at all and I certainly don't condone the BBC airing it even though Sachs himself said that he'd rather they waited until he was able to come in and record the show with him (he was meant to be in on the day of the original recording but wasn't able to).

But some of the mindless hypocritical crap that people from all corners are spouting on the issue is just ridiculous.

Firstly, the BBC only received two complaints after the Radio show. Two. And those were both to do with the language, not the scenario. And yet, by the 27th of October, around 1500 complaints had been made. Hang on, now I know some people may be too busy on the day of a radio show to fire off a letter or email straight away, but usually most complaints on broadcasting are filed within a few days. But 9 days afterwards? Some people must be pretty lazy.

News stories started appearing. From 1500 complaints on the 27th, the total somehow rises to 10,000 by the end of the 28th. Now hang on, are we to believe that all of these people were listening to the radio show and have only ten days later decided to express their anger? Or maybe, they're just being bandwagon-jumping snot-nosed, nothing-better-to-do cretins and have decided to complain after reading the newspapers.

Given another few days, complaints were over 30,000. I think I can safely rule out people genuinely offended here and just assume that they're all f**kwits with nothing better to do than complain about something that's not affected them in the slightest.

By this point of course, Brand and Ross had already been suspended, the head of the radio show had resigned, apologies had been issued all over, Brand had resigned from his show and Ross had pulled out of presenting the comedy awards, and still jobsworth knobends have nothing better to do than complain about it.

It doesn't stop there though. You get people who have absolutely nothing to do with it poking their big noses in, like Gordon Brown and David Cameron. You guys: You have jobs, go f**king do them, and let the BBC sort out their own problems.

But what's really riled me is that snivelling, whiney-voiced c**t Louis-F**king-Walsh from that awful TV talent show. He said, and I quote:

"I'm glad they've been put in their place... It's about time. Jonathan Ross does and says what he wants and gets away with it."

Hang the hell on here - you've made a television career, along with fellow big-headed c**t Simon Cowell, about being as bloody rude and offensive to people as you like and destroying their dreams, and you have the gall to complain when Jonathon Ross does it?

The only remotely reasonable one in this whole saga is Noel Gallagher, who shares my sentiments about it: "It's so typical of the English in general - 10,000 people get outraged, but only five days after it has happened." I completely agree with him.

So yeah, the whole saga cheeses me off to. Yes they were stupid, the world is bored now.

Personally i think Jonathan is a cock... Russell is a funny bloke and he didn't actually say anything (untill the 2nd, mebbe third phone call with the song which did maybe go a little bit over the top... and maybe when he said i'll do anything i'll wear a condom lol...).

It all seems to have settled down a bit now.

Russell has come out of this ok, I heard a lot of people talking about his channel 4 show and how funny it was on friday, more so than probably would've watched it if he hadn't been in the headlines so much. Russell has always been a comedian who says stuff he shouldn't, he's come out of this on top really, I read Lovefilm have recorded a 133% increase in rentals of his dvd's!

Jonathan however has become a bit screwed by this, he doesn't have channel 4 backing him, he isn't known as being outrageous, the more people who hear the recording and realise him shouting that out started it all, the more damage that is done to his reputation.

Russell will no just go play in some Hollywood films, continue his ponderland show and do some stand up, his wallet won't be touched. Jonathan has lost 1.5mil in wages already and stepped down from hosting the comedy awards, it'll take a lot of work for him to come out of this ok.

I'm afraid this part of your argument cuts no ice at all.

You don't have to have listened to the radio show in question to think that the actions of those involved were wrong. If you hold that opinion AND pay the license fee, you're perfectly entitled to express your thoughts, as it's your money that's being used to pay these unfunny twats to do what they've done.

Despite what all the trendy kiddies who like Brand might think - old duffers who'd never dream of listening to him have just as much right to comment on how THEIR money is spent as the kiddies do; especially as they're probably more likely to have paid their license fee.

I find neither Ross nor Brand particularly funny, and I pay for a TV licence. And I don't give two-fifths of a shit what they did. It wasn't particularly nice, but then as others have said it's not exactly unexpected from either, both of whom have reputations for crossing the line.

I still maintain that people still making complaints to the BBC long after they'd both been suspended and apologies had been issued just smacks of jobsworths jumping on the bandwagon - the sort of people who moan and bitch constantly about things but never get off their well-padded behinds to make anything better.

I don't know if "Points of View" still exists as a TV or radio show but I'd fully expect the sort of whiney gits who write into that show to be the sort of people who've complained about this. It always seems there are people out there actively looking for something to get offended by just so they can moan about it to anyone who'll listen.

And the BBC are the main culprits in all this, because not only did they cock up by allowing the program to be broadcast in the first place, but they're the main perpetrators of the irrelevant media frenzy around it.

Hurrah for you and your live-and-let-live philosophy - it doesn't mean the rest of us are bound by it though!

I'm not quite sure of your point here - if these people don't like Ross and Brand, then complaining about them to the point of getting them suspended and them resigning HAS made things better. How else are they supposed to act, get on TV and record their own radio shows?

I'll repeat my position, as it's unassailable - these people have paid to fund the BBC, they have every right in the world to be offended when a show that they have funded crosses the line from 'something I don't find funny' to 'totally unacceptable - not in my name'.

While you seem to have a massive problem with people complaining about a show you don't believe they've watched, you appear to see no problem at all in you being allowed to dictate who can complain, and why, and when. That rather smacks of double standards, doesn't it?

As for complaining after the BBC has 'apologised' - the BBC is infamous for issuing a half-hearted apology and then carrying on as before. As an organisation, the BBC seems to think that its public status allows it to do as it sees fit.

Or maybe they have a genuine belief that they're entitled to have heard? You seem to think that we should listen to your whining about what you perceive as an issue here - why shouldn't BBC viewers have the same rights?

They are indeed culpable for not stopping the broadcast - but Ross and Brand still dunnit - they made the phonecalls which were offensive regardless of whether they were broadcast or not.

The BBC is very much in a difficult position when it comes to coverage of its own mistakes - after recent scandals it probably doesn't want to do anything that could be pointed to as dishonest or a cover-up.
