Any ideas on how to fix a drafty window?

Basically in my uni accommodation I have a window like this in my room;

And well a lot of air is getting in around the edges of the window which is making it damn cold in here. Is there any way of like sealing up the window without damaging it? I don't mind not being able to open it through winter its just I can't stand how cold it is in here, even with the radiator on max.

Any help will be great .

Also is it draft or draught?

As The Shaggy says, window film !!! Best and quickest way.

Get one of those condensation crystal bowls that absorb the damp from the air too !

I have a variation on the film suggestion which is to make a lightweight wooden frame that fits against the inside of the window frame. "Glaze" this frame with a piece of clear acrylic stuck on with silicone and screw it over the window.

You can take it off and keep it down the back of the wardrobe in the summer.

Oh, and get some decent, lined curtains for it. Try in a charity shop for them, get the heaviest ones you can find.

That's how people used to stop draughts in a house like that.

I like your frame idea stinkwheel I may give that shot, so that way I can get into the window open if I feel the urge. However all I've got is a blind and no curtain rail so curtain is a no go, not sure my landlord would appreciate me fitting one either .

as suggested. a light wooden frame with a clear perspex bonded in. works a treat.

its not so much the draught from outside you are stopping its the cold glass against the heat inside that causes the air to move around.

(worked at everest for 14 years)

For a quick fix use cling film over it. It may stop a bit of the draft.

You could always just pin a curtain to the top of the frame

I have one that is a pig However it's not the bottom of the door, it's the edge of it.

Maybe nailing something to the edge of it? Or putting some of that furry foam stuff (I don't know what it's called - just remember it black and furry/velvety)

When I was a student, I had this trouble. What I initially did was dry off the entire window & frame, then get a big piece of plastic or used cling film, then would stick across the window (using masking tape). Then I would get a piece of wire and drill into the window half way across, get some fabric and use as a secondary blind/curtain (leave the top bit so you can still have natural light), then if the regular curtains aren't heavy enough, get another sheet and tuck it the top into the curtain rail and secure with pegs.

At the end of winter, when you want the window open again, take down the cling film/plastic and clean the window then open.

Easy peasy.

Another tip, get yourself an electric blanket from Tesco or Boots, then heat that up and sit in bed and do your work...great way to stay warm!

Cheap easy way of fixing a window that doesn't close properly.

The film thing got here today, I've put it on and it seems to make a little bit of a difference but I can't get it to tighten up from a hair dryer like the instructions said it would :/.
