Sorry if i sound like a total flid but what exactly is HDR?

I've seen a few threads by N30 in general bike chat i think and the pics look different but actually slightly worse quality than the original.

Or maybe i'm just missing the point Laughing

High Dynamic Range.

Problem with a digital camera is that they collect a very limited amount of detail when it is overexposed / underexposed. By that I mean a dark area of an image will rapidly turn to black and a light area rapidly turn to white, losing the detail in those areas (far more so than a conventional film image). Digitial cameras are getting better at this, but still far from perfect.

The idea of the HDR software is that you take 3 identical pictures, but over expose one (which gets you the detail in the dark areas at the expense of the normal and the bright areas) and underexpose another (which gets you the detail in the bright areas at the expense of the normal and dark areas). The HDR software is used to combine those 3 images to produce a final image that has more of the detail at both ends of the scale.

However by fiddling with some of the parameters in the HDR software you can get some strange effects. Such as the effect above, where the image looks similar to a painting.

All the best

Keith

Thats absolutley brilliant Keith, thank you. Helpful karma will be sent where its due tomorrow when my karma pixies replenish themselves.

I might just have to start messing around with this stuff, however i need a new camera first as mine seems to have gone a bit dolally.
