I'm learning to drive at the moment, and checking out insurance on a few different cars to get an idea what I'll be paying and what sort of car I can afford to get on the road. I've got quotes for a few now, ranging from 1l to 1.4, and I'm getting almost identical quotes on all of them. £1000 give or take a hundred or so for TPO, and more like £600 for TPFT.

First, why is it cheaper to get fire and theft? That makes no sense to me. And second, why so little difference? I was expecting to be royally raped on anything over a 1.2, but there's bugger all difference between a 1.1 fiesta and my GF's 1.4 Lanos.

Hi

The biggest risk as far as the insurance is concerned is what you hit (after all it would be easy for a novice driver to hit a new car and land up with a £20k claim even without injuries) and for that the value of your car is irrelevant, and the nominal performance difference is probably also pretty irrelevant.

All the best

Keith

How old are you and where are you getting these £600 quotes from?

I'm 23, putting all the details in honestly including provisional license. I'm using confused.com, and Admiral and Elephant seem to crop up in the cheap end most often.

That's because it's a Deawoo and nobody in their right mind is going to nick that. Also they are mostly bought by pensioners and women.

If you take the difference between a 1.1 Festa and a 1.25 Festa there is a big difference in performance.
