Hi i am having trouble removing screws off the transmision casing, the screw ends are worn and when i try to unscrew them the screw driver just spins and bits of the screw fall off making it worse. Has anyone got any ideas on how i can get these out? any tools i can use? Any help appreciated.

Tap the head of the screw with a hammer and then try, this does 2 things, breaks the seal of any crust that has formed, and reshapes the head of the screw slightly. If that doesn't work then it looks like you'll have to sacrifice the screw and use some sort of driving tool and a hammer to push the screw round, then replace it with another screw. Make sure you use plenty of lubricating spray as well.

Hi

Also make very sure you are using the right kind of cross head screw driver. There are 2 different types.

Also worth getting an impact driver set (quite cheap).

It that still fails then cut a slot in the head of the screw and use a flat bladed screw driver in it (or the flat bladed impact driver bit).

All the best

Keith

Impact drivers are great.

In a world where screwheads seem to shear off at the drop of a hat, such tools in a modern world are a God send.

If by any chance anybody doesn't know what an impact driver is, its sort of a cross between a screwdriver and a chisel. You put the driver into the screw slot, bash the other end with a hammer and the impact forces the driver to turn together with downward force (from the hammer) that you just don't get on normal screwdrivers.

I'm not sure what it's called, but I believe you can get a kinda of putty for such instances.

The idea is you put this stuff in the screw head, then put your screw driver into it and let it harder. Once it's hardened you can then try to unscrew it; because all the gaps are filled you should ahve a much better chance of getting it out.
