I know you can legally drive to and from a prebooked MOT, but exactly what is the definition of prebooked?

When I asked the guy in the bike shop (who I know reasonably well) to make an appointment, he just said 'Oh, bring it down in the morning'.

Is this enough for the purpose of the police?

I would assume he has booked you a slot as the mots are done on a computer system now which means garages are limited to how many they can do in a day. Thumbs Up

I wouldn't have thought so.

IMO Pre booked, you give the shop your name and basic details like the reg plate of the bike, and they tell you what time to turn up.

"Bring it down in the morning" sounds to me like they're not expecting it to busy, they're just saying turn up whenever you want so there's no need for anything to be booked in advance.

For it to be a pre booked MOT they would have to have your appointment written down.

If you got pulled and said you where on your way to an MOT they would ring the testing place and ask if they where expecting you.

Although saying that I just get "bring it down"

As has been said, preBOOKED. If you need to prove to the Police you are riding to the test centre and they call it, which they do, then I'd pass my details over to ensure I was covered.

If you explain to the MOT centre it's not MOT'd at present they will/should twig and note your reg.

You just have to tell them you're turning up not MOTd on the phone and they note it down. Sorted.

If the shit hit the fan the MoT tester could write you a letter stating that you spoke to him about booking the MoT. Not everyone writes down what MoT's they are doing. The MoT system doesn't have a booking function either.

To be safe though I would ask them to write down your details and the Reg number of the vehicle.

If push comes to shove how can you prove a communication trail with the MOT test centre? Answer would appear to be a phone bill showing X minutes of phone calls, email trail etc etc. If plod don't believe you how can you prove it in court. CYA

I,ve been stopped twice on mot days and both times I've gone in the police station with mot failure sheets from the day that I was stopped and it'd been no problem, if it'd passed then it would've been no problem as there's no times printed on the mot.

I like to make sure it's booked in though because I doubt any insurance company would be easily pleased if something were to happen.

On the one occasion my bike didn't have an MOT or tax, I phoned up and told the place it needed to be booked in for above reasons, they duly noted the reg & my name and gave me a time to turn up.
Phone them up again and tell tell it needs to be booked in for legal reasons.

My mechanic usually writes MOT bookings down in a diary, they don't usually give you a time-slot as such. They do 20 MOTs on a Saturday only, and if you've "booked" you just drop it off and either hang around for half-an-hour or come back later.

MOT's on bikes with no MOT have to be booked regardless of whether or not you are a trader.

MOT place needs to record the registration of the vehicle and its expected time of arrival. Time of arrival doesn't need to be an allocated MOT time.

Just out of curiosity, what's the punishment for riding without an MOT?

Up to a grand fine, but no points. May invalidate your insurance though.
