PostPosted: 11:22 - 31 Oct 2008    Post subject: Broken a bike, informing the DVLA? Reply with quote

Right having broken the gs500 i've now sold the engine, obviously for that engine to be registered on a new bike it has to be 'cancelled' from my own first?

Anyway, does this mean i have to now inform the DVLA the bikes been broken for spares?

If so what do i do?

My V5C doesnt say anything on informing them and i still have the frame which is all legit.

Any help much appreciated!

IIRC there's a little yellow bit that you fill out. You have to tick the box "Tick if you personally broke up this vehicle".

Not really. The DVLA do not care about engine numbers much (you can easily register an import without the engine number, and quite a few makers never stamped engine numbers, such as Moto Morini where it was only the UK importer who bothered to stamp one).

All the best

The frame is basicaly worthless without the V5. You cannot just swap frames easily, effectively what you do when you put a different frame on a bike is that you transfer every from the old bike onto the replacement frame, and keep the registration of the replacement frame.

All the best

Most breakers and the like sell the frame with the log book. Unfortunatly the main market for a frame with a log book is those who want to give a stolen bike a new identity.

All the best

The V5 is the frame, everything else is just an ancilliary part. If you sell the engine and the new keeper registers it on his logbook it will not matter that it's still registered on yours. Obviously if someone buys your frame and V5 then they will need a new engine and will probably register that with the logbook.

When I've broken bikes i've done just this, and sold the frame with the logbook as if I was selling the whole bike.

A fine for what?

And how would they ever know that you've sold the bike in pieces rather than as a whole?

If the bike is recorded with the dvla as being broken for spares there is nothing stopping you from selling the frame as a spare part, the buyer won't be able to get the reg back but the frame is still fine to use, selling the frame as a spare part rather than a spare i.d. will stop any one using it to ring a stolen bike and remove any chance of the police turning up at your door if they do.

If you change a bikes frame you do not need to keep the registration for that frame, you just send off your bikes v5 with the change of frame number section filled in, sometimes they will ask to inspect the bike sometimes they don't.

If they ask to inspect the bike they will check if there is enough of the origional bike left to be considered "the same bike" it's points based so if you have only changed the frame you won't have to re-register it.

only if it was a desirable bike, this frame would only be bought so some poor bugger can rebuild his crashed bike ....

i've bought frames and logbooks on more than one occaision to either build a custom bike with or rebuild a damaged bike

if his bike was something exotic and valuable then maybe i'd agree with you, but to say the majority of frames go for identity theft is ridiculous

You might be surprised how much a brand new frame is. Not unusual for one to be cheaper than a 2nd hand frame with a log book.

All the best
