Random question, but I'm looking to find an extension cable of at least 60m in length, and I cannot find one anywhere?

eBay, Google etc nothing comes up, so wondered if anybody had one and if so where did they get it?

Ideally I'd like 75m.

Buy the cable, the plug and the socket and make one yourself.

Not sure if one as long as 60m will be available, 50m might be the limit for selling them (driven by either sales or some kind of rule).

However why don't you just get 100m of 3-core wire, a socket and a plug?

The size of reel for 60m worth of wire will be huge. Surely a generator of some sort would be better?

The question must be asked, why do you need one so long? Shocked

Girth or length, what'd you rather have?

Laughing

Back on topic, it is quite some extension needed.

We currently have a 50m cable, and my garage out the back doesn't have power, and I don't really want to leave the plugs outside incase it rains, but it's only a few metres short.

Making one is a good idea though! Where would I be individual cable for a not so ridiculous price?

Nobody anywhere seems to sell over 50m.

City Electrical Factors or somewhere like that would sell 100m reels. Bear in mind though, you may get a bit of a voltage drop over that distance.

Why not cut the end off the existing cable, get a junction box and join it to a normal-length extension? Then put some silicone in the junction box to seal it up. Thumbs Up

Would a junction box be sealed and not be off risk of water getting in?

This is all just incase it rains as I don't want the water getting into the plug sockets obviously, otherwise it wouldn't matter about leaving it outside.

You might struggle to buy a drum of cable that long. My dad works with someone (bearing in mind he and they are all system control engineers...so glorfied electronic engineers) that tried to buy a long length of cable. And they wouldn't sell it to him because he technically wasn't qualified to wire a house.

Although they are qualified to design and build control system for oil refineries and all sorts, they wouldn't sell him a length of cable (like 10m's or something i think he wanted). So you probably really will struggle to get a 100m length. Unless you bought it off the t'interweb, but it will be heavy and cost you on P+P.

IP56 junction boxes for outside use:

Better bet than silicon I reckon. I've never had a problem buying cable in any lengths before - places really don't give a fuck what you plan to do with it.

If your going to run power to your garage at lest do a proper job and not run a pvc flex down the garden Rolling Eyes

What you need to 3 core 2.5mm SWA (Steel wire armoured) cable, all eletrical supply shops will sell this and the comment about non-quailfed people not being able to buy cable is utter bollacks.

From your consumer unit you need to run a 2.5mm 3 core cable this is normaly twin and earth but l think a new round fire reistance type is sold theses days in its place coming off a 20 amp RCD (2.5mm SWA is rated up to 31 amps, 2.5mm twin and earth 24 amps), then to a metal clad juntion box near the outside of the house ie fixed under the floor etc enter the cable to the box through a stuffing gland or a grommet, make the connection between the cable cores from the consumer unit and SWA cores with a suitble size plastic termainal connector strip (know as a chocolate block connectors) in the juntion box.

From the jubtion box you can run the SWA to the garage and into another juntion box using brass SWA glands at either end (the cable entering the house and into the garage depends what you can do but for example mine goes out through a air brick on the side of the house straight underground then up through the garage floor, the SWA cable needs to run along near the edge of your garden buried in a trench at lest 50cm deep some people also cap the trench with bricks etc for extra protection.

From the juntion box in your garage you can now fix a metal clad socket onto the side (single or double max total load of 20 amps on what ever you run of them) with a conduit copular and bushs which you run the live netural and earth cores through from the swa to the sockets connections, if you wanted to have more sockets lights etc you need to use higher rated cables and a larger RCD.

Examples:

100 meters of 2.5mm 3 core SWA (live, netural, earth) can be picked up for around £60

This is just a genral guide l would bother doing this unless your pretty sure you know what your doing or have a mate that does.

Or just take a fused spur off the ring main and fit an RCD if your ring main doesn't have one, much easier!

You'll be limited to 13A through the whole garage though.
