Thinking of a cheap little runaround to warm my cockles in winter Laughing

No experience with the AX but a bit of experience with the car it replaced, the Visa, as our family used to have one. Ran rings around 4x4s in winter because it was light and had the skinniest tyres ever that cut right through the snow! Brilliant ride quality that I presume the AX shares some of, and good fuel economy. Never got nicked, even when it was left in the centre of Bradford and Leeds with it's windows down, but we think this might have been because if even we couldn't start it with the key half the time, the crims had little chance trying to start it either.

Basically if an AX has lasted this long without disintegrating or being scrapped, then it's probably a safe bet for a runaround.

That said, there are two or three Saxo diesels on ebay for less than £700 at the mo so for the extra few hundred quid they might be worth the money. Could easily sell them for what you paid for them.

if its the 1.5d then Id say get one. I got a 106 with the same motor that's done over 170,000 and still going well. Cheaper tax bracket, good mpg and as mentioned, they're good in the snow as the tyres are so narrow.

Still looks ok too Smile

Please stay away from the 1.4 Diesel engine. IIRC, they had wet liners which were pourus, and about 10 years ago the engines were in high demand due to common failure.

The 1.5 Diesel was a massive improvement. My old man used to use Peugeot 106 1.5Ds (exactly the same engine) for couriering. He used buy them at 6 months old then run them into the ground. He used to get to 200'000 miles in 3 years with very little maintainence.

They're not a bad car, and are pretty cheap. I struggled to sell a 96 1.0 petrol a few years ago for £300.

Although it was a petrol I had while learning, I reckon it's a good little car. Nice and cosy inside, the petrol was extremely good on fuel, so the diesel should be brilliant, plus it should be less "jerky" to drive. Be warned though, for the love of god, don't crash it. All I'll say is; Airfix build quality Confused Very Happy Thumbs Up

I had a citroen ax. Good for one thing mainly. Fuel efficiency.

If I had to get another old banger for whatever reason it would be very high up my list.
