Umm... "Emergency" Radiator Filling

Hey everyone

While riding to work this morning, on my relatively new VFR400, I thought she was running a little hot... Turns out, I don't think there is very much water/coolant/antifreeze in the system at all...

I bought some Antifreeze on the way to work and I am hoping to quicly sort this during lunch.

As I understand, I would need to mix the antifreeze with water (as per directions), remove the radiator cap, and pour it in there?

Am I correct? Anything else I should know/have not thought of/need to know?

there may be a "bleed" point to get any air locks out of the system...

you should use distilled water , mix it 50-50 , fill it to the brim , them , put the cap back on , and then let it run for 4-5 minutes squeezing all the pipes to the radiator, stop the engine hold the front brake and push it back and forth then open the cap and refil to the brim normal water has minerals in it that will corrode your cooling system inside out but for a short period its OK , just flush it when you get home.

Most antifreeze solutions have corrision inhibitiors in them. Its no major if you use normal tap water. Better still just buy it ready mixed next time.

My manual recommends boiling the water to kill some of the impurities.

Boiling is to get rid of limescale, it can cause blockages in the rad. All a matter of where you live.

bah we live in the North , where the water is semi clean (I remember seeing a tramp take a dump in a resevoir a few months back...

In london it is atrocious it lime scales up your kettle in a week...

and you can use an entire bar of soap in the shower without getting any lather...
