PostPosted: 08:01 - 04 Nov 2008    Post subject: Left-hand side indicators - sorted, but now the right-hand.. Reply with quote

My indicators have packed up just on the left-hand side, I've checked the bulbs and fuses and they're all intact. However, the left-hand side indicators neither work on the direction switch or the hazard switch, oddly the right-hand side works fine.

Do I assume the worst, that the switch mechanism has died on the left-hand circuit?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the indicator relay has gone or is going completly. Take it to a dealer or get it serviced somewhere tell them I'm sure they will replace it.

I had the same issue with my old bike after leaving it out in the rain for about two days. Damp causes problems in the electronics sometimes.

Try listening for a clicking noise where the speedo and fuel gauge are.
If you hear clicking with indicator on/off then thats the problem, other than that I dont know....if your bike is under warranty get it fixed for freeeeeeeeeee! Laughing

Could be a few things although moisture in a connector block and/or chafing of a wire on that part of the loom are your most likely culprits. I recommend going over every connector on the circuit and cleaning them up with WD40 or similar.

A multimeter would help a bit...

Thanks for the advice chaps, interestingly all of the indicator bulbs are lit when the alarm arms/disarms. So it's obviously not the bulbs, though it could be the relay, and the connector block could have damp in it as it was a bit wet this morning.

I only had it serviced Friday, and they did the valve clearances so I'm beginning to think they've trapped a wire or knocked one out of the block connector. I'll have a look tonight when I get home armed with the multi-meter as I've already spent lunch dismantling to trace the fault.

Sounds like the switch wiring. The alarm bypasses it all. On my bike the hazard is on a different circuit so I would have a look at the handlebar switch block connectors first.

The relay doesn't usually have seperate circuits for left and right, usually just a live and earth, even the extra wire on a three pin relay is for an additional earth.

All sorted t'was the switch after all, I dismantled it, blew the crap out with compressed air, squirted WD40 everywhere and as Arkwright would say "j-j-j-jiggled it", and it works. Very Happy

Thanks for your tips, and even if some were off the mark it's really good to know there are decent chaps out there willing to give their time to suggest stuff, Karma all round.

As everyday is a school day and you learn something new I also learnt that:

In the bog standard Suzuki toolkit there is no screwdriver capable of opening the indicators. Doh!

The spare bulbs I had were actually double filament and therefore useless. Doh!

The spare fuses I had were physically the wrong size. Doh!

And the mechanic who did my service on Friday knicked my rag and latex gloves from under my seat, and we have no swarfega at work. Neutral

probably your 11 year old frigging herself on the back that caused it... check for wet patches shorting the wires.

We also don't have any washing-up liquid at work as we have dish washers. Sad

Oh dear lord I can't believe it, the right-hand side indicators packed up this morning on the M5. Same symptoms as before, lights on via the alarm, but not via the hazard or indicator switch.

I dismantled the switch-gear when I got to work, drenched it in WD40 but to no avail.

Rather prudently I bought a second-hand one off eBay for £20 which came yesterday, so guess what I'm doing in the garage tonight? And no Spratt I don't need your suggestions Confused

Fixed again I hope; a couple of the I.T. infrastructure guys at work circuit tested the indicators for me during their morning break. The indication was that there was a break in the circuit somewhere.

At lunch I stripped it down again and we jiggled everything, eventually I think it boiled down to the main block-connector on the left-hand switch gear.

So with me pushing it from above and one of the I.T guys pushing from the bottom, he felt and heard it click. Sure enough the indicators now work, I doused all the exposed electrics in WD40 and have just finished putting it back together.

I feel a bit safer now riding home 30 miles on the unlit M5 without either the left or right-hand set of indicators. Cool

Where's the "not worthy" smiley?

I did have a go at the block connector first time around, but I think all the jiggling must've produced the desired effect, if not the correct result.

Unfortunately I couldn't squeeze it together with enough force one-handed and due to the tightness and location I couldn't get both hands in. It's annoying that such a simple thing is effectively a two man job, well two man unless you remove the air-box and the front throttle body. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, cheers for the help. Thumbs Up

Obviously it couldn't have been fastened correctly in the first place, just enough to make contact. PITA bike makers.
