What sort of work dinner is it? A suit-and-tie jobby?

I'd say either way don't wear trainers, shoes are so much classier.

Shirt half open, white pants over trousers, beanie hat, mittens with a string that runs through the arms of your coat, duffle coat, clean hanky.

Your mum not answering the phone today?

I generally find it is not possible to be overdressed for this kind of thing, you can only make others feel underdressed.
