I know I know...it ain't bike related, it's about a car...but it's not any old car...it's the Eco-Elise. A lot of it's components are made from hemp, which I think is a damn good idea.

Hemp is getting recognised more and more as a very good insulator, for animal bedding, as a change from fibre-glass, etc. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

So animals start munching on your car?
Anyway, isn't hemp what you pant to make wacky backy plants? ____________________ It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, then it's bloody hilarious!!! |

I did a lot of reading up on this car as I'm quite interested in eco projects, especially those that do 60mph in less than 6 seconds. And the Elise is a great base for an eco car, because it weighs very little and for those in the UK, is produced locally so doesn't have the environmental impact of shipping.
The hemp panels are light (and laquered, so unlikely to degrade or be eaten ) and again, sourced and produced locally (very near to Lotus's base). I seem to remember that many other components in it are sourced and produced locally too. Unfortunately the only thing that isn't is the Toyota engine, though it's not had to travel from Japan at least, because as far as I'm aware that particular unit is manufactured in the USA.
I like the solar panels idea for producing the electricity the car needs too.
Best of all, it's about a million times more desirable than a Prius too... ____________________ TARMAC - Automotive blog *UPDATED 26/3/09 - Abandoned fuel stations to go electric? ~ Buy my eBay stuff!

Actually hemp is a separate plant to the cannabis plant - same family, although if you smoked it - I suspect all you'd get is rough lungs!!!
