Can mobile phones be listened in on?

As in tapped into.

My mum seems to think they can as she will hardly speak to me on the phone incase nasty neighbour can hear what she is saying as one has said in the street he can hear everyones phone calls. There is a bit of trouble going up her way.

Talking about mobile phones here. She has to come up and tell me info as she wont say things on the phone.

can people do that? I know you could do it on the old none digital cordless phones as we used to pick up the house one on a radio frequency and can pick up police radios. But mobiles?

With old analogue mobiles it can be done very easily. With digital ones I think it is possible but very difficult.

What he may well be doing is listening in on her wireless home phone.

Don't think that is analogue. Put it this way I have had a mobile since 1994 and I have never had an analogue one.

my mate on the submarines listens to 'our' mobile conversations all the time !

and as for landlines- when I worked in telecoms we used to legally listen to a specific number to check the quality of the routes ..... of course some people abused this and spent all the night shifts listening into trans-atlantic calls ... patched into the speakers ... made great background amusement while they sat and watched tv / played cards / slept.

It used to be possible on the old analogue systems, but they were switched of 5 years ago. With GSM or 3G calls the call is encrypted over the air interface and converted back to clear speech once they hit the wired network. To intercept/listen to a call would take some serious equipment (which I doubt your neighbour has). Once the call is on the wired network it is possible for someone to listen to it, however they would have to work for the mobile service provider to do it as it is nessecary to log on to the Mobile Switching Centre to do it. Anyone doing it without good reason (in fact a police warrant if you want to target a particular number) would be putting their job at risk.
