As per title really. I've got a few devices that I'd like to plug in and out (E.g. my new inforad), can anyone think of a good way of doing thing? I was thinking cigarette lighter, but I'm open to ideas.

All I really need is a direct link into the battery I can unplug and make waterproof. Smile

I ordered one, it arrived quickly, I simply attached directly to my battery terminals, and cable tied it under my seat. I just need remember if you leave something plugged in it will drain battery even when not running.

Have a search as there have been multiple threads on this recently with everyones method of doing it.

That website is expensive for what would cost you a couple of quid in parts. Towsure (or Maplin for a bit more) sell Marine waterproof 12v sockets for £4, some 25amp wire, a fuseable link with a 25a fuse and a 30A relay and terminals you're good to go with a heavy duty socket that only comes on with your ignition.

You wont need one for the Inforad, you splice it into a wire or the fuse box.
I got my 12v socket from Halfords, but I got it at mate's rates as I know a Fazer owner who works there Wink Mine just lives under the seat and I have never had an issue with it getting wet (yet).

for about half of the cost of the motorcycle power sockets posted above, you can get waterprrof sockets from oxford which can be used with their battery chargers - but they dont have to be, so you can buy them and correct to the battery - or you can run them through a relay which works off your ignition - that'd be much better so you never forget to turn something off or unplug it.

Sounds interesting, do you have a link or more information, not entirely sure what you're on about. :/

Biggest problem about doing it myself is my dire lack of ability to make it.

it doesnt have a picture - but it's a link to where you can buy it.
https://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=559398
it's £7 but i've seen them cheaper befoer in difference shops - you should be bale to get it lcoally too so save no the postage.

here you go - some more;
https://www.keysafe.co.uk/cigarette_socket_lead_2pin_plug_optsocket2_8365
or
https://www.accumate.co.uk/it020007.htm

EDIT:

that needs you to have the optimate charger connection leads - also cheap enough, or free if you have the charger. but you could always get one of those, cut off the connection at the bottom and hard wire it your battery or fuse box to allow it to run off of the ignition.

they can be made cheap enough and very easily - though you are less likely to have a waterprrof one (though check at maplins they might have something) or jsut get one and leave it under the seat - i have two wired up that way.

how do you attach the relay?

Are their just two wires that connect to the battery terminal or is it more complicated?

Besides what if you want to charge items when the engine isn't running? As I did during my euro tour when camping

Someones taking the pi$$ charging those prices
A female cigarette socket can be bought for 50p-£1
solder a couple of wires on, crimp/solder some terminals for the battery. And don`t forget to shove a fuse in there somewhere to help protect your bikes wiring/battery

you`ll only need a relay if your drawing high amps, to stop it frying the wiring, or if you want to have a switched supply off the ignition etc. most devices inc mobiles & satnavs draw very little power if left plugged in for extended periods. you can quite easily leave a mobile phone to charge up and have little effect on the battery itself. So long as its a good battery.

one other point, since by its very name a cigarette socket is designed to draw power for a short period of time to heat the cigarette lighter, Rolling Eyes it also means it isn`t well designed. The contact area is bad, and can cause arcing & shorting, thats why after a long period of time the crud up on the inside.
By far, the hella or BMW socket is more suited to powering mobile devices due to it having a better contact area. you can get Hella sockets that panel mount and have a waterproof cover, I picked 4 up on evilbay for £2.50. you can pick sockets from truckstops or online https://store.truckstuff.co.uk/_EFA2F8538A1449E6A420173B06592609/electricalconnectors/

cigarette sockets, don`t come in standard sizes, they actually come in 21mm & 22.5mm dia`s. as some of you may have noticed that some can be a tight/loose fitting when you plug something in.

To be honest, I'd rather no use a cigarette lighter, something that can plug into my Oxford Maximiser wiring would be great. Very Happy

Problem is, it seems easy enough, but I've tried doing electrics before, and I've learnt the hard way that I shouldn't. Everything works for a short time, but not for long periods.

that link i posted does exactly that then. just plug it in when you need it, or leave it connected all the time and only disconnect it when the bike is parked up and n charge - then disconnect the charger and connect the socket again. easy as that - same fittings as the charger - push on, pull off.

I recently had installed on my bike one of those lighter plug to charge my tom tom. Now...
we checked with the guys at the garage the there was power coming into it. there was.
then I plugged my charger into it and didn't work. No light on.
I plugged the extension cable into it. Green light (on the cable) on.
Then I plugged the charger into the extension cable, the green light goes dim and the charger will not work. No light on (on the charger).
Tried the charger into a car and it worked.
We even changed the fuse on the charger.
Any idea what could be the problem?

I put one on my SP1 for touring last year, it has a cap which keep the rain out.

It cost like ?5 and even if water does get in and shorts it, it has a fuse.

Win win, it worked all round europe and still does today !

I installed a 12v socket on my bike last year. It was a couple of quid from Ebay. It has a cover on and I also bought a 12v adaptor that locks into it so it is waterproof even in use. I just wired it in with a relay so it comes on with the ignition, but I can leave it on by putting the parking lights on.
