Put it on 'on' setting. When you run out of fuel (I wouldn't make a habit of it) you turn the tap to 'res'.

With the tap set to 'on' the fuel should only flow when the engine's running, so it's off when the engine is, that's the one for when you need to take the tank off.

Prime is just like having a permanently open tap, no suck required from the engine. Use this if you want to drain fuel out of the tank into a container for something (stove, mate, arson) or if the bike has stood for a long long time and you want to let fuel into the carb before starting.

There's no harm in running it to the bottom of on and i don't think there is to the bottom of reserve, running to the bottom of prime would pull through all the shit from the bottom of the tank which wouldnm't be a good idea (on and reserve work from an inch or two up from the bottom of the tank so it'll still be petrol for all of it.

Prime and reserve pull fuel from the same inlet (just that prime needs no engine vacuum to let fuel pass). Using either position because the fuel has run low increases the risk of getting dirt in the carbs. The more fuel in the tank, the less-likely it is that any dirt resting in the bottom will get agitated.

The only reason I say not to make a habit of running onto reserve is the chance you'll be midway through overtaking a lorry when the bike starts to cough and splutter. Then you'll have to deal with that AND start faffing with the fuel tap at the same time......

Fair enoughs but if you reset your tripmeter thingy when you fill up you'll have a good idea when it's going to happen so you shouldn't have those sorta problems.
