daft question i know, But do US cds play on Uk players?
I know that dvds have region codes which stop (well, supposedly) you playing imports, but how about cds?

Music CD's all work on what is known as the Philips (or Sony) Red Book format. The reason it is called this is because the man who invented the protocol wrote it down in a red notebook.

It is one of the only true industry standards. When Sony and Philips did it, they did it right. Unlike a lot of other stuff (HD DVD, Bluray, Mini Disc and Betamax for example)

Try spending a day trying to diagnose and repair a philips DVDR5520.

I think the design team had spent a long lunch at the coffee shop when they came up with this one. As for the DVDR5500. The factory janitors designed and manufacturered this one while the rest of the factory were on their holidays.......

Actually Owdamer, if you notice... I pointed out that Sony and Philips pretty much do everything else wrong.

Let me just reiterate... The ONLY thing that Sony and Philips ever did right was the Red Book.

Surely being in the technical repair industry you would know about it? Wink

Well, I can tell you aren't technical by the fact that I know what Red Book is, and you don't! Wink

(I'm not technical either really...my ex boss was just extremely knowledgable about such things and it just so happened that he explained it to me one day. Can't remember exactly why... was something to do with broadcasting. Perhaps the difference between compressed and uncompressed audio. We'll never get the sound quality from a media that we buy in the shops as we can get from CD because CDs are uncompressed. Anything we get in the future will be compressed. Enjoy CD's while you can!! </g33k></n3rd>)
