Split pins

3 months ago I'm riding home and my chain snaps, I'm on a country road in the middle of nowhere and it's gone midnight. Thankfully Mike was home and came out to help which involved towing me home, which, to say the least, was an interesting experience.

Tonight I'm heading to a party in Manchester, coming down the same country lane, as I get up to speed I hear a familiar crunching sound, so I pull in the clutch and coast in to a parkin bay. Sure enough, the chain is hanging off the sprocket, it hasn't snapped this time, the split pin had just decided it wanted to lead a less stressful life by the kerb somewhere.

I stopped literally 5 metres from where I last broke down! Except this time Mike is in Shrewsbury, so £100 later the AA come to collect me, they don't even carry split pins so they take me home.

I honestly can't believe the split pin gave up, I won't be using them again, it's only an XJ600, so about 60bhp? if I'm lucky.

Btw if anyone near me (I'm between York and Leeds) has a split pin or something they can get to me tomorrow I will suck you off, I'm currently without transport and have 2 gigs I really need to be at this week.

Why do you have a split pin holding your chain together?

When the first chain died did you check the rear wheel bearing or the cush drive bearing?

The first chain died due to complete lack of maintenance on my part, that was my own fault, the link didn't come apart, it did an actual snap.

Bearings etc are fine, the split link just decided to run away.

Amazing how quickly an hour goes when you're bouncing round a parking bay singing along with your ipod.

Offtopic, what's the top speed of your bike Shaun, you've got the same bike as me and I think mines f*cked, or just meant to be slow.

wire split links on. a loop of ms wire over and behind the link will miss the sproket, twist it tight and it holds the link together.

Verbatim from some long lost post with a ZXR61 picture.

In the old days it was fairly common, at least with the people I knew, to safety wire the split link on larger bikes. the wire was wrapped around the centre of the link, it didn't interfere with the sprockets.

I've even seen them with a bit of silicon on the split link to stop them getting knocked.

No idea if the silicon works but I've never had a split link come off.

I was well impressed with the trailer, it had no need for a ramp because the wheels got fitted after the bike was loaded, a genius design!

Precisely why I wont use the fucking things any more and invested £65 in a chain rivetting tool.

Split links are dangerous on big bikes. That is my oppinion based on real life experience of at least 4 of the bloody things having gone AWOL on me at speed and a couple of others I noticed before the chain disappeared.

You can imagine how carefull I was fitting the last one which came without a softlink eh? 200 miles later I was stood at the side of the road with no fucking chain on my bike.

I think the motorcycle industry agrees with you StinkWheel.

Personally I'm perfectly happy with a split link. But the last 3 or 4 chains I've bought havn't come with one.

I also spunked £50 on the right tool.

No split links are'nt designed to cope with the sort of tension and vibration, wear and speed etc that a larger bike would put on them.

Personally I would'nt really have a split link chain on anything unless it was an absoloute nescessity/ more usefull.

I trust split link chains on pushbike obviously and they are suitable for smaller bikes as they are lightweight and strong enough to fit there given purpose.
But I don't see why you'd have one on a larger bike, why are you skimping on your chain?

Also FFS Shaun you've had me typing split pin all through this post, its split link you pleb! Learn soem mechanical jibbery.
