Sell it to the jeweller that valued it. I assume it was valued and that 4k is not what you paid for it new?

Are you basing the £4k on a recent valuation, or what you paid for it?

I wasnt sure if the shop would buy it? It was H.Samuel who valued it about a month ago.

an insurance valuation isn't worth the paper its written on (i'm assuming you didn't pay anywhere near 4k for it?), the only way to recover any value is to sell it privately.

I used to work in the pawnbroking industry and so called insurance valuations were often simple 5 to 10 times the asking price which was in turn 5 to 10 times the scrap value.

You're very lucky to have the ring still!

If I were you, I'd just run round all the places asking how much they'll give you for it, rather than an insurance valuation. Smile

Go round asking how much people will give for it (Jewellers, not just people) and then play them off against each other.

Hang about round the player entrance of your local football club and try to sell it some mug player.
Cash convertors wont give you a fraction of the value.

Tradition suggests that one spends approximately a month's salary (but it doesn't say before or after tax) - so someone earning between £48k and £70k per year might spend that much.

I spent a month's salary on my wife's engagement ring. The good thing about following tradition is that the girl's father pays for the wedding. Thumbs Up

Ring details:

0.73 carat
Platinum band with 3 small diamonds on each side.
Think it was F/G in colour and SL1 in clarity.

Perhaps you have a hot flush or something. I really couldn't give a toss what other folk earn. I just dont understand the need to spend that much money on a ring.

£4000 seems a little steep?

Completely off topic, was this the girl that was claiming you were the papa of her 'baby'?
