I'm thinking of taking the gf on a 2/3 day break somewhere in Europe this coming weekend, as her dad's been in hospital and she could do with some cheering up! However, having never really been anywhere in Europe (school trips and a lads' holiday to Portugal don't really give me much to go on!) I don't really know where would be good? Having had a look on lastminute.com for flights & hotels it looks like Paris/Madrid/Barca/Venice/Amsterdam can be done for roughly the same price (~£200 each), but no idea what would be best.

What is there to do in these (and other) places? I think we'd prefer to do things rather than just sight see. Also she'd probably like to sample the local shopping, but presumably any city has more than enough shops to cater for that...

So, any recommendations?

Ta Smile

your probably better off with somewhere like spain, theres usually some form of festival in one of the cities.

I think a beach/ski type thing would take a week to be a good holiday

Krakiw. Bloody cold but cheap to get to, cheap to stay in and cheap to eat and drink. Loads to do, lots of shopping, bars, clubs and restaurants and Auschwitz is worth a visit.

Do you really think a place where so much death occured would be suitable in this situation?

Go to Amsterdam, smoke your worries away. Very Happy Thumbs Up

I can't personally recommend Barcelona, but my cousin used to live there and raves about it as a great place for a long weekend. It would be warmer than home and relaxing as well as interesting.

Alternatively one I can recommend and at this time of year is Stockholm. I had a terrific long weekend there first weekend of December a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Another one I can recommend is Vienna, again at this time of year. It's the most beautiful city and if your girlfriend likes horses a trip to see the Lippizaners is a must - quite magical, but book a seat in advance if you can. Both places are very good at setting your happy Christmas mood Very Happy

I did do a skiing weekend to Courcheval but that was in March time and the snow was terrific!

Hope that you both have a lovely time wherever you go Thumbs Up

Cologne is a decent city to visit. Cheap flights usually with HLX.

Paris is dead easy and theres loads to do there. Copenhagen is great especially for shopping and easy to get to.

+1 for Paris, possibly the world's most romantic city. Venice is beautiful, but it can stink at times. The only thing Barcalona has going for it is La Ramblas and that only comes alive at night. If you can time your trip to coincide with a carnival then Munich is brilliant fun. For shopping, try Milan.

Krakow really is a great place. Lots of really cool bars and restaurants and they are dirt cheap.

Really cool city.
