right... i have my test in december, and hopefully... if i pass, am going to get a big bike Very Happy away with the 50's and 125's Very Happy .
due to the fact that i am only 17, i will be on a restricted licence and have to stick to 33bhp Evil or Very Mad . i love supermotos and have been looking into the new drz400sm. but im unsure if that will be enough power as the top speed of an average supermoto is around 100mph. is there a supermoto out there that will have enough power to easily keep up with the motorway speeds that doesnt need servicing every 30 hours or isnt too expensive. i no supermotos arent really designed for top speeds, but i am going to be doing a few track days so would like the power Very Happy
i have also been looking into streetbikes like hornets, bandits, sv's etc...

can anyone reccomend a good bike along those lines that would be good even when restricted?

thanks for any help guys! Smile

If it's 33bhp, they all should be capible of 90-110.

If your considering Hornets etc. check out the Triumph Speed Four there a brilliant bike really underated. There fairly cheap and was voted the best handling bike by ride magazine's power survay. They are cheap to restrict compared to the others £60 from main dealer, and mine hit 110 in 33bhp form.

My bandit 1200 was £570 third party when i was 17, had licence 1 month.

R6 03 was 2000 on my own, 480 with my old mans.

R6 08, 4500 on my own, 550 with my old man.

I have 5 points though :/ and currently got flashed by a cam on the A4 so I'm worried Sad.

Edit: They were all meant to be 33bhp and the insurance classed them as 33bhp.

I don't know how a 33bhp DRZ would ride, but the 39bhp full power version is quick enough for town and country riding, and would sit at 80mph on the motorway no problem, if you could stand the discomfort. I don't think there are many light and pokey supermoto bikes that would be comfy to ride at 100mph for long or for more than about 50m in one hit.

I doubt the performance of a 33bhp restricted DRZ would be severely down on a std bike, at it would probably still reach 85-90mph if you wanted to ride it that fast?

The other options might be:
1, Yamaha WR250X
2, XT660X
3, Honda FMX650
4, Kawasaki Versais
5, Aprilia Pegaso Strada
6, KTM 690SM

All depends on your budget and what you want most out of a supermoto. For Value and style i reckon the FMX650 isn't a bad bike at all though!

ah! well its funny you say that, because they were the two bikes that i origionally wanted Twisted Evil .

im only small and light Embarassed so i thought the drz would suit me. and the extra 250cc on the fmx wouldnt make a huge difference but im unsure Confused

do u have any personal experience over the two bikes

cheers m8

The Triumph is much lighter than a bandit and I think it is a bit less than the hornet too I imagine the SV would be lighter. The S4 is 170kg.

My Insurance at 19 with 1 ncb on a 6 month old S4 was £575 TPFT. That was in a bad area, garaged and alarmed with alpahdot doing 6k miles.

I don't have any personal experience of the Honda FMX no. i have had a 20min ride on a slightly tuned 08 DRZ400SM, and i thought it was a right laugh TBH! It's light easy to ride and you can corner really quickly and turn and stop easily even when giving it some beans. The FMX from what i have read is not much faster at the top end, 95mph? But it has that bit more midrange and that makes it easier to ride at times. The DRZ is grunty enough for a 400cc single and you don't need more performance unless your riding on Motorways and fast A roads at illegal speeds+ most of the time IMO.

The FMX looks wise is a bit nicer, and the engine is 33bhp out of the box. It's a well proven unit and has been around for 20years! It also tunes well with plenty of aftermarket tuning kit available to reach 50bhp+ from it.

I am in EXACTLY the same situation as you.
I am the same age and im considering both a sportsbike and a supermoto.

I was deciding between the suzuki SV650s or the DRZ400sm. I chose the SV650 because i am more interested in owning a GSXR600 in 3 or 4 years.

Insurance on the two is similar, but be aware that the DRZ is more nickable. The SV is in group 10, so its cheap compared to pretty much anything over 125cc.

It's down to what you want to own in the future and getting the experience on a bike thats most similar to it.
Remember to get insurance quotes for anything you consider.

Just an FYI, being retricted makes no difference to insurance.

Not true if you state a restrictor kit is on the bike it raises the insurance as it adds to the value of the bike. What with restriction sometimes costing up to £300.

I disagree, I can ride pretty much anything with 2 or 3 wheels.

Well... Yes i suppose. But who ever tells the insurance its restricted? The only point would be if it lowered the cost, and it doesn't.
