Was asked this question last winter by my dad.

Do you prefer to ride in ice cold conditions that numb your face, fingers and any other exposed parts.

Or

Pissing rain (typical all-year round english weather)

Whilst riding, i prefer it to be raining than cold but the thing i don't like is putting your wet bike gear back on when you have to go out again. So its quite a tricky one. I would probally go for the cold.

I prefer rain tbh, don't mind getting a bit wet and decent waterproofs keep you 90% dry anyway.

In the ice cold you risk there being ice on the road and it's harder to stay warm than it is to stay dry. It means wearing lots of layers of clothing which then cause you to sweat after a while which in turn makes you colder if you don't have a moisture wicking top on.

Rain for me, please Thumbs Up .

If I really had to, I'd take rain over cold. Slight grip loss, but no frozen/numb fingers, toes etc. far easier to keep alert in the rain than the cold I find.

Cold, as long as the road isn't iced up. Rain makes the armour plated 4 wheel muppets blind.

Agree with Shaggy above.
However, my reason is also because I know if I'm cold I can get warm.
If I get wet I don't know if I'll get a chance to dry out.

Thumbs Up

Is anything nicer than a romantic meal after a spell in the cold, bottle of wine, soft gentle music (i'm thinking Tina Dico, etc).

If you've got something warm to come home too, the cold will only spur you on. No one dry can enjoy the soft fuzy feeling of a clean towel handed over to you from a loved one. Ying yang. Ping pang. Have to be wet to know drynees, cold to value warmth.

I like all the weathers of the skies, as it's all part of the loveliness of nature's plan, the beauty of creation, and the wonder of cyclic systems that regulate this floating rock

(As least that's what I try to say to myself when my undies start soaking up the rain water)

I'd definately rather ride in the cold, good gear plus a bike that does a good job of keeping my legs warm making it a non event as long as it's not icy.

Although decent gear can keep you dry, as shaggy mentioned you can't really do anything about the loss of grip and visibility.

Cold, providing I have warm gear! In the wet I'm on edge, feeling for grip, keeping my wits about me due to lack of visibility. In the cold I can relax once I've got some heat in the tyres and have some fun. Unless it's icy. In which case, warm and wet, again providing I have good gear, is probably preferable. No one likes ice!

Cold, Rain Soaks through eventually and makes you cold and wet...

Also if its just freezing outside i can still wear my normal gear with maybe a layer or two more, if its raining, all the bulky waterproof stuff has to come out...

I'd go for the cold. It's easier for me to get warm again, then to get dry. I've not bought any waterproofs or boots yet.

think i would say cold as when i get to work im outside 90% of the time anyway, and i hate getting wet at work, as getting wet and having to stay outside with nowhere to get warm is not a pleasant experience, where as geting cold means only the hands really suffer but that can be cured with a hot cuppa at break times. so its cold all the way for me

Another vote for rain, with my full waterproofs on , it is just my hands and feet (but mostly hands) that get wet the rest of me stay pretty much bone dry Smile yeah its a bit of a bore and you look silly but rather look silly than get wet !

as for the cold, i find that lots of thin layers is better than a few thick ones, i normally (in the cold) have 2 pairs socks, PJ bottoms, tracksuit bottoms, leather trousers, t shirt, long sleeved shirt, thin-ish jumper, body warmer (tucked into trousers) bike jacket, nexk tube, and balaclaver. Think thats covers it besides boots, gloves and helmet

I prefer cold as you can still have fun chucking the bike around once the tyres are warm. My wet weather confidence plummeted after I started driving cars and wimping out of riding the bike in the wet Embarassed I used to laugh at these sunny sunday heroes and now I've become one Laughing

I would choose rain any day of the week, but I hate being cold more than the average person. Having a mild case of Raynaud's phenomenon doesn't help either.

None.

I caught pneumonia in december 2006 because of the cold! Misty evening, 8PM, foggy south east coast and I tried to average 70mph from Eastbourne to London. I did it for the craic and I needed to get home for Christmas eve - full winter clothing, 4-5 layers of t shirts, underlayers, long johns, cold killers, crab claw gloves, heated grips, you name it, i had it! That wasn't enough for the cold. Flu symptoms came, then after a few nights of difficult breathing, i went to the GP because i thought i was asthmatic then they diagnosed me with mild pneumonia, off action for new years and coming up to exam week.

In the wet,

I rode to a job interview, london to sheffield = 2.5 hours normally, except this time, the M1 was waterlogged and it took 5 hours. Cue soaked leathers, drenched skin despite waterpoofs on leathers - waterlogged boxers and purple hands! No lie, my interviewer was shocked that i even made the meeting! The next day, news reports came that rotherham and bits of south yorkshire were under water ... looks like i took the brunt of it.

In reality, if it's sunny then it opens up i.e. a thunder shower, the speed and relative warmth will dry me up, but if it's wet and cold like in winter, i'd rather stay off the roads. I'd not wish pneumonia on anybody particularly if it could be avoided and being wet just makes the cold even worse! In which case, take the car or public transport!

But given the lesser of evils, i'd tick rain - goretex clothing, slower riding, be especially more vigilant of other road users and you'll hopefully be fine - watch out for rainbows on roads... diesel Thumbs Up

Would rather ride in the cold, as there are ways to get slighly warmer with extra layers

whereas in the wet theres no escape, you can put waterproofs on but that doesnt stop the rain on your viser that you have to either guess where your going or squint through the smears of water when you wipe it off, also got the risk of less grip which makes me warey when cornering.

I would also add to this poll wind! That has been the worst for me so far, i would much rather ride in cold & rain with a slight breeze, than the gales that are blowing lately!

I would prefer cold (but not icy)

I hate snow and ice but I also would prefer to not ride in the rain. Its not nice having wet thru to the knickes syndrome, but what I hate most is that I don't have windscreen wipers on my specs (and I always ride with my visor up). If it rains, I put it down a click or two and peek out from underneath.

So yeah, cold is fine, so long as there's no ice.

Fairweather biker, moi?
Nooooooo.
Lightweight?
Nooooooo.

Just too long in the tooth for all that bad-weather shit Laughing

Neither. Both hurt in different ways.
Although pre-accident I would ride in any weather.

ice cold for me, as long as there is no black ice. bike feels just as good as in warmer weather if you let the tires warm up.

I hate riding in heavy rain as my textile trousers are a bit past it now, legs get absolutely soaked after about 20mins riding and then they move on to get freezing cold whereas if its just really cold they seem to keep me perfectly warm. boots are brilliant in the cold, keep my feet snug! got a frank thomas XTi jacket and even in sub zero temperatures i feel comfortably warm with just a t-shirt and the lining, surprising really but if i wear a jumper aswel everything feels tighter and i feel colder.

went out in the p***ing rain the other day and havent used fog city or such product yet this year and i found it impossible to see.... if i had the visor down it would steam up and i couldnt see..... if i opened the visor the rain would blind me..... only thing i could do was pull over and wait for it to ease off a bit

ice cold it is!
