I had a really rough saturday and sunday so decided to stay in and have a lazy weekend. Ended up watching Michael Moore film Sicko which was on sky movies. I know everyone is going to complain about the NHS but when you see some of the horror stories from the film i was shocked.

One of the stories was a baby girl that had a high fever, they rushed her to hospital (she HAD health insurance) but they took her to the nearest hospital but the insurance company said they would only pay if they went to one of their hosptials. The hosptial refused to help her girl. By the time she got here to that hospital she had died.

I know our/every goverment is corrupt but when you hear the recording of the president talking about giving less health care for profit and then you see the proof of the govement passing a bill then the people who passed the bill end up working for the drug company. Shocked Shocked

Just goes to show you don't privatise our NHS.

I would recommend anyone to watch it.

Never heard of this film, but I think I'll watch it as I watched his films about Columbine and 9/11 which offered some food for thought.

People are always bitching about the 'underfunded' NHS, but I'd prefer it to be in the public domain rather than being privatised.

Yeah its not a nice thought people were getting refushed left right and centre.

It also shows you how much their goverment really care about the people who help during and well after 911, people who volunterred are not getting any medic help they need because they were not on the goverment payroll.

Well worth a watch.

Watched this ages ago and liked it. No doubt there are some skimming of the facts and a bit of bias in there somewhere, but then again when you see a woman crying over her dead husband because the health insurance companies refused him the only possible chance to save his life because it was a new area of research, well, I dont think there's much bias in there. It does make you appreciate the NHS a lot more I think, things could be much much worse and then people would really be complaining.

Seems like France is the best option Healthcare wise, but screw that, I'll take MRSA over having to suffer living with the fackin french.

Lets not be too hasty with praising the NHS, my Dad got MRSA when he went in for his broken leg, and they have pinned it facing a touch out so he can't use his rear brake anymore, thats hardly good.

I myself have been waiting nearly 11 months for an operation that I should have been on the 'priority list' for. If 11 months is priority I feel for the poor bastards on the normal list.

Fair point, it's not perfect by any means, but they wouldn't refuse to operate on you if you were dying because you hadn't paid them, and (as far as I know) they don't cut corners to make profits.

MRSA doesn't only affect NHS hospitals. I understand you've had bad experiences with the NHS, but would you personally prefer all hospitals to be privatised ? Healthcare only for those who can afford the insurance sounds a little unfair to me.

Not privatised by any means no, just given more money to be made better. Though whilst the Government's priorities lie elsewhere its never going to happen.

And thats all I have to say about that.

This extra piece on Norway is an interesting watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4L6-0WRfSA

The way they treat their criminals is remarkable and I think we can learn something from them.

Agreed completely on the bias, grass is greener on the other side etc but it's still interesting.

MRSA, C.Difficile etc, lies within the responsibilty of the cleaners, nurses, doctors etc and their hygiene practice, so I dont see how this reflects on government funding really. Serioulsly, walk around a hospital long enough and the way they carry on sometimes its no bloody wonder that such diseases proliferate.

I was born into the NHS and though its not perfect by any means its a damn sight better than the USA alternative imho i.e people being bankrupted just to afford life-saving surgery.

That is the thing its not looking at the unemployed people in the documentry not being able to afford the medical care it looks at working class people lossing everything including their loved ones.

I get a decent enough wage but if i went to hospital and got a 100k bill i would be f!cked and i would say most would.

It just sickens me how people are looked at in the large scale as profit or loss, when you see the US president signing a bill that will allow the durg companies to charge more than they already did. You get a the guy talking about how much he loves his mum bullsh!t then go work for the company they let in, its just criminal in my eyes.

But i bet he did not get asked for payment or if he had insurance to cover the cost?

I know what you are saying about MRSA and the NHS but we can go private if you want in this country and the poorest of people can get the help they need.

I would hate to see the day i have to take my son to hospital and they close the door on me and say no because i could not afford his treatment.

I can just see it, you have a bike accident the option of a helicopter ride to save your life but your insurance wont cover it of you come out 300k in debt.

Erm the NHS is already privatised , it was done under most peoples noses, and most people do not realise. HSBC off shore owns many of the UK hospitals under the guise of PFI.

It goes something like this,(numbers made up sort of)

Government wants a hospital , to build it themselves will cost £5million pounds. Government doesn't want to pay 5 million since it will show up on their balance sheets.. = bad.

So government asks dodgy builder A to build said hospital after putting it out to tender (ie taking the biggest bribes). The government put up zero money for this , but they rent it back for 25 years at something like 1.5 million JUST for the building.

Seems a good idea until you step back , and quite often the government ends up paying 20-50 times more than the cash price initially.

And the company have a right to maintain the building the behalf of the government. HBSC then came along and bought the maintenance contracts, and decided to 'sweat' them ...

Which is why it costs £2000 to change a light bulb in a hospital the staff are not allowed to do this themselves. To add further insult to injury HSBC uses offshore trusts to do this so we don't get any of the taxes back on the income they make off hospitals.

So like it or not many UK hospitals are already privatised. same with schools and some of the newer UK prisons.
