RXS100 motherfuckery

how the shit does something like this happen?

i get a plaintative call saying ''the bike wheel wont turn'' etc (this is the day i give it back to her after borrowing it whilst the GSXR is in the garage, so im kind of shitting it thinking ive done some terminal damage to the RXS that i cant afford to fix).

so after a 15 minute drive, i get there, have a little push, feels like the engine is seizes the wheel just drags, but rolls backwards.

kicked it into neutral, started first kick... ok thank fuck for that says i. turned off, cycled through the gears, double thank fuck...

engine was fine.

so with limited tools (adjustable and a pair of pliars) i went about getting the wheel off and having a look inside to see what could have fucked up, to find this...

i didnt realise RXS100's had 10 billion brake shoes! it utterly minced itsself, ripping the cast drum supports out of place on the wheel too.

any ideas what could have caused this? she could have died (what a shame) and its just generally fucking dangerous. if she was on an A road she would have come off.

she chose a right fucking shit place to break down though, loads of ped kids riding past like knobbers and a load of adidas's share holders pottering about looking for stuff to nick... while im there tinkering away at the side of the pavement with my arse hanging out.

to solve the problem, i tipped out all the shitty bits of metal and reassembled it, so now theres no rear brake whatsoever.

Cheap shit pattern brake shoes or terminal alloy rot on the original ones would be my best guess.

I can tell you exactly what happened.
The liner was glued to the shoe, water got under the liner caused oxidisation weakening the bond and it came loose. The thing eventually let go, jammed up and smashed the shoes.
It happens a lot with reconditioned brake shoes, I recommend that all bonded liners are riveted on the lead and trail edges at least.
Riding old Ariels all are brake shoes tend to be reconditioned, I know of four (including my own ) that failed last winter.

i was thinking along the lines of one of the metal dowels shearing off, but your way seems more likely.

anyway, just ebayed the new hub, just about to order new shoes, but where the hell do i get the springs from?

apparantly the little slut has told all her friends that i sabotaged her bike!! before she phoned me, 3 of her friends were called to tell them this. nice.
