Right, there are a lot of videos out there of people smashing up heavily downgeared stuntbikes because they've never ridden a bike before.
Here's my top tip for getting on a 100+ bhp wheelie machine with no prior experience.
Treat it like nitroglycerin.
Imagine someone told you the bike was a nuke, and if you accelerate hard, you WILL die. They don't tell you how hard is too hard, just that you die if you get there.
Now apply that to the first time you pull away. Treat the clutch like it was the most dangerous thing you've ever come across, and the throttle as well.
You let the clutch out and accelerate as little at a time as you possibly can until you're moving. Then take baby steps until you know the power of the bike.
Voila

Thanks for that informed piece of advice from an experienced rider who has clearly ridden many large capacity bikes. Rolling Eyes

You might not have received a Rolling Eyes smiley from me if you had have posted a video of you riding into a tree or flipping a bike or something... Otherwise how relevant is your post? You're telling members of the forum either what they already know, be it from experience or common sense, or you're telling members of the forum who won't listen.

Thanks for the lecture! Laughing

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Oh ffs where's the compassion?
If this was as crystal clear as you say it is, why do people keep posting videos (not here) of their buddies hard failing?
I can at least say I've gone from a 125 to a 600, 800 and 900 without making a fool of myself, rather the opposite actually, so I do have enough experience to make a judgement.

to hard Is when you think "aaaagghhhhh im gonna crap my self", but seriosly ride the bike slow i.e. small throttle openings and gradualy increase the amount you open the throttle untill you feel you are confident that you are reacting quick enough at the new pace.

Riding a faster bike isn't to difficult, If anything its les effort to ride a bigger bike, the problem comes when your reactions/ riding style are stuck in small bike mode.

Isn't this coming from someone that isn't even old enough to ride a large capacity bike? Or someone that hasn't never ridden one? Razz

Even if I'd never ridden a big bike, I think it's good advice to anyone trying to ride an R1 without any prior experience. The best advice of course is try something smaller first. That's my opinion you can have yours

If anybody is foolish enough to jump on an r1 without any prior experience they will get whats coming. The type of person who jumps on an r1 without any prior experience is also the type of person who wont be listening to other peoples advice.

People shouldn't go onto a bike they can't handle.

meh. a friend let another friend on his gix 750, going from a vespa he was fine.

It's actually quite easy not to smash it, it's just you wouldn't find it on t'net if nothing happens.

I kinda understand where the OP is coming from, I think.........
Even a F1 car can't wheelie with a bit too much throttle.

rubbish

i tried an r1, when i had just passed my test and had had an rs125 for a year.

Its just about being careful.

I would agree though, that the advice at the top of the thread, is just what sensible people would do anyway, and the idiots wouldnt listen to the voice of reason.

Sadly many don't ever find their limits as they are die, Crying or Very sad tring to find it......

The OP has a fair point. I bet many a smaller bike rider has got onto their 1st big bike and when comming up to overtake has done the same as they always do and wind the throttle right round..... Only to find that the response is a shade more than they had before....

If you are sensible, and show restraint, I don't see why you couldn't hop straight on any size bike (after doing your DAS for example) with no experience of bikes at all.

I know you mean well, but to be honest thats the shittest bit of bike advice I've ever heard.

How exactly is making yourself scared of the bike going to help? Perhaps you'll get so obsessed with the evil 'deadly' throttle that you won't notice that car pulling out on you. Then it won't be the power of the bike that fvcks you over.

First time I rode a geared bike, a Yamaha YB100, I nearly flipped it. So, goes to show, its not the power on tap, it's how much of a ham fisted idiot you are on the controls that matters Laughing

https://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2006%5C05%5C10%5Cbikepics-584050-800.jpg

Picked it up about a month after passing my DAS.

Quite scared when taking someone else's bike, took it easy for the test ride round the block but knew instantly that the sound, weight and general willy extension ability was spot on.

Making it do 100mph in 2nd and trying to rip my shoulders out of their sockets never got old.

Think I'll stick to big bikes.

I did. I went from a rs125 to a blade Neutral

I find that treating the clutch like you would a very lowpowered 2 stroke works. Keep slipping the clutch until you have pulled away fully. the troubles occur when you just dump the clutch.

and nope, i do listen to peoples advice.

Possibly because the moment a video camera comes out, IQ drops 70 points. And videos of people pulling away normally don't end up on YouTube.
